Dead technology - what to do?

Hello darlings,

Well, the office decommissioning continues; and we find that we have a shuitload of quasi-, part- or non-functional technology - old computers, the odd scanner, a few printers of varying vintages, an astonishing number of monitors and keyboards, mice, hubs, modems....

So, does anyone know of a good home for this kind of shit? A charity or something? Or does anyone fancy a rummage?

this appeals to my worst instincts - that of the hoarder, the magpie with one eye on what could be done with these things - apparently this condition is genetic - my grandfather apparently bought 10 broken TV under the (mistaken) belief that he could canniblise the parts to make at least one working machine...

While i hope i am not that gullible I cannever resist a good rummage.

Your best instincts, conversely, urging you to send the toxic bits to China and dump the rest in a landfill? (Don't mean to get at you, btw, but hoarding is actually looking like one of the best options).

Within a few years these people (who I just found on Google, they may be the fuckers who are sending the crap to China in the first place for all I know) will sort you out for a fee.

I can't find my local 'alternative' free newsletter I picked up in a charity shop the other day but that had pleas from local groups for computers & I'm sure you won't have a problem finding something in your area. A case of picking "your favourite charity"?

Schools. There's a big need for them in the schools in my area. Every little bit helps...

I got a flyer in the mail a few years back asking for Computers for Moldovia or Yugoslavia... I think there's loads of charities that will ship 'em to lesser computerised societies...

Schools fer sure. Schools, local colleges, especially cheapo adult educationy type places.

If push comes to shove you could try dumping the whole lot on your local thrift stores.

Schools and charity shops was my thougnt - there is a local place that will recycle the print heads and cartridges, so that's good.

Sleaze - pop over in your lunchbreak tomorrow, if you fancy it.

Lyra - mmmmmmmaybe. Will keep you posted when the dust settles.

Last year my company donated all our old PCs, monitors, and assorted ancillary goodies to a local school. They even came and got them and seemed happy with the opportunity. This morning I saw a notice in the local paper for a computer equipment recycler that will be glad to take your stuff for a 15.00 fee per piece...appointment required. I read where recyclers in China have done some serious damage to their local environment.

You could try http://www.computer-aid.org/. They're a London based charity that recycles computers for use in developing countries.

I have family that work in Schools and they're always telling me that most Schools are desperate for computer equipment however old it is. If it functions they'll probably be eager for it. Definitely your best bet.

Schools. Or computer-lacking friends. (I got given someone's office's old PC last year... then ended up buying a decent one as soon as I could afford it).

Giving to schools seems the best- although, when we moved into our current flat, we found all manner of weight-training equipment that we didn't want- expensive shit, too... and had SUCH a hard time finding anyone to take it. We tried schools, youth groups, church youth groups...

Can't remember who took it eventually. But someone did, although the larger pieces of equipment (the benchpress thingumajig, for example) we'd just chucked out because we didn't have the room...
