Jailhouse Rock.
Last week VH1 ran the premiere episode of Music Behind Bars, a new documentary about prison bands. While the premise certainly sounds more interesting than the average episode of Behind the Music, the fact that convicted killers are on TV has (suprise!) managed to piss off a few folks. I can understand the victims families thinking "Instead of singing and dancing, perhaps they should spend more time thinking about what they've done," but the reality is that these guys are going to be locked away for a long time. What are they supposed to do with their time, learn how to make shanks? More suprising is the fact that the Pennsylvanian House of Representatives has "passed a resolution asking VH1 to donate profits from the episode to the state's Office of the Victim Advocate."
So. What do you think about prison bands; should the inmates be allowed to rock out on a Friday night? Should VH1 be allowed to film the bands? Is the House's resolution designed, at least in part, to dissuade VH1 from filming more episodes of the show? And, since I didn't get to see the show, was the band any good? |
