Election Protection: the volunteer election overseers.

People for the American Way is setting up a volunteer task force to monitor elections. It seems like a good idea.

Election Protection (EP) is a non-partisan, coalition effort with a simple goal: no more Floridas. EP works to make sure that every eligible voter casts a ballot that counts on Election Day. PFAW Foundation and our partner organizations aren’t seeking post-election promises, excuses or law suits. We want same-day solutions to voting problems so that no voter is denied his or her right to vote - and we’re ready and willing to make it happen ourselves.

On November 5, 2002, and before, Election Protection staff and volunteers will be on the ground in key states to help prevent voting problems like those seen in the 2000 election and several 2002 primary elections. Your participation is greatly needed.

Volunteer poll monitors make EP an effective advocate for voters and a powerful deterrent to those who would try to deny voters their rights. Trained by attorneys and armed with cell phones that connect them with a lawyers hotline, EP volunteers distribute the “Voters’ Bill of Rights” at the polls and identify and solve problems as they happen — not after Election Day has passed.

I think one of the Florida government people already complained saying that America didn't need this because it wasn't a Third World Country, will try and find the quote...

Has it been an on-going problem in Florida since before the 2000 presidential elections?

What about other states? Any data?
