Barbeloid Takes opi8

This strip, which I illustrated for writer and occasional Barbeloid Alasdair Watson several months ago, has just turned up on opi8.com, and I'm feeling more than chuffed enough to let you all know about it. It's a twelve page chiller with a musical bent. Not my usual "thang", and god did I bodge a few frames, but it proved to be a valuable slab of experience and seemed to successfully "disturb" a few of it's initial readers. What more could a lowly nib-pusher ask?

Looooove your use of tone, Nelson. I think the most striking panel is the one where gabe is sitting on the bench just before satan (or whoever) comes along and tunes his geetar. just gorgeous. And the transition to clean lines for the magazine covers after that scene works very well too.

There are a few small things that seem a little awkward, mostly in the talky bits, like the random-seeming leg in the middle right panel when gabe and the other male band member are talking, and gabe's face in the large panel when he's bawling blaise out for blowing the a&r man. The "we can do this"/"let's do this" sequence (I just mean the top three panels that contain those lines) didn't really come across for me either, but I think that's more because of the script. Although I can see why it was there.

Anyway those are very minor quibbles and only there because otherwise this post would just have said "GUSH GUSH GUSH". Some great compositions (particularly like the slashing panel on page one and panel one on page 2), nice sense of style throughout everything, the characters' appearances are well observed (is the girl wearing those padded trousers? Nice touch. I hate those fucking things though), and those tones.... oooh.

Big up yaself.

When I say "tone", what I actually mean is black. You knew that, right? I mean, it's not as if anyone would think I was some lame-ass chancer who misuses terminology, or anything.

Solid patches of black would be "blacks."

"Tones" means those little black dots that make up various shades of grey.
