Oneida?

Is anyone familiar with the group Oneida?

Cos I just borrowed their album ‘Anthem of the Moon’ off a friend, and it’s frrkin’ great.

The list of ingredients runs something like;

Big sheets of space-rock guitar distortion
Jerky New Wave rhythms and Devo-style robot singing
Old fashioned and unashamed psychedelic folkiness (we’re talking flutes and songs called ‘the Wooded World’)
Hip-hoppy beat production
Beard-hoppy dense multi-layered vocals
Frequent free-jazz noise freakouts and krautrock drones
Extremely silly keyboard noises
The indefinable but inescapable idea that they’ve listened to Mercury Rev’s ‘Boces’ far too much

..and it all seems to fit together perfectly.

I don’t know how old it is, but if it came out in 2002 I think it’s just beaten Erase Errata to my award for the most unexpectedly brilliant weirdo-rock record of the year..

Oh yeah, and they call themselves things like Baby Jane, Kid Millions and Fat Bobby, which also gains my approval.

Yeah, they were in Bloomington a few months ago. They had massive gongs and a man who played them w/great ferocity, if I recall correctly. I remember them being quite interesting, but I don't think anyone I was with got into them. Their loss, I guess.
