I've been wondering: does anyone else think that a person's name affects their personality? or that their personality conforms to their name over time?

For example: I have two friends. Justin, and Max. I can use them as examples because no one knows me or what i am talking about. The two are very egocentric. Does it have anything to do with the fact that their names come up in conversation frequently "just in case," "maximize" or were they simply born that way? Why are all bimbettes named "candy" or "cindy" or "missy?" (not all missys or cindys or candys are necessarily bimbettes, but..)

I wonder, by this theory, what my name must seem like.

As Opus said in Bloom County: "Would John Kennedy have been John Kennedy if he had been born Ernest Borgnine?"

My memory is hazy here, but I seem to recall reading an article in a psychological journal which suggested that people whose surnames begin with one of the first ten letters of the alphabet would invariably achieve more in life as they were used to their names being called out first in school registers. Presumably the author of this diagnonsense had never heard of Wodehouse, Sassoon, Russell, Wilde, Shaw, etc, etc…

New Scientist has been keeping a tongue in cheek diary of incidents of 'Nominative Determinism' - people whose profession matches their name.

I've seen people who work under pseudonyms take off their celeb personality like a coat and go back to being jus' plain whoever - but that's a choice - the creation of a persona.

And please, Sand... topic abstract next time, just because it's good practice and it helps the mods...

I used to think there was something in first names when I was young, I thought all Michaels seemed to be the same, but I only knew 3 so it wasn't really a great experiment.
