Anyone Been To Hong Kong?

I've decided I'm spending my Christmas and New Year's holidays in Asia - I booked a ticket today for a trip to Hong Kong and Tokyo. I'm covered in Tokyo as I'm meeting friends there, but I'm travelling to Hong Kong alone. Has anyone been? Any tips, recommendations, warnings, etc?

It would be greatly appreciated...

That would apply more to Hong Kong than Tokyo, if I take the meaning correctly...

Hong Kong was an odd little spot when I was doing the "wander around Asia" bit. I found some neat little temples while I was over there, but that's if you feel like wandering with no direction and such and I couldn't tell you exactly where I went... But a lot of it is like one big shopping mall, at least the touristy areas.

I'd definitely take the ferry to Kowloon. Very neat stuff and more than a few temples over there. There's also these enourmous long hikes over mountains (well not mountains really, more like overgrown hills) you can take that allows you to see into China and across the bay on the other side. There's also some pretty neat shows playing at the opera house, if you feel like blowing a good deal of money.

But you know, I can't be much more help than that. Hong Kong is actually the city that I remember the least while I was over there... I remember feeding cats next to a restaurant. Flirting with some guy in a fashion store. Buying a ton of books on the Monkey King. And that one tiny temple with the spiral incense cones entirely covering the ceiling. As for actual locations? jeez... I'm no help at all am I?

I would say, stay in Kowloon. It's much more interesting than Hong Kong and a lot cheaper. Most of the cool markets - Ladies, Jade, Bird, Night - are in Kowloon as well.

In fact, I'll say stay in Tsim Sha Tsui - don't be put off that they call it the tourist ghetto - it's close to a lot of cool stuff and for the things which aren't close, there's trains. Depending on how long you're going to be there and how many trains you'll catch, it might be cheaper to get a travel card rather than individual tickets

Catch the ferry to Lantau island, then a bus and see the huge bronze Buddha. Catch the cable car up Victoria Peak and then climb as high as you can. Go to a restaurant and order something by just pointing at the menu. Buy a pound of rambutan still on the branch and eat it in your hotel while watching undubbed game shows.

Keep lots of change if you want to catch the little buses. You need exact change and the drivers speak no or very little English - "pay", "money" and "off" seem to be well know words.

If you want to buy anything expensive, find out your local price first, things aren't always as cheap as they seem. Also you might have to be satisfied with no warranty. Try and go early in the morning as a lot of Chinese traders conside the first sale of the day lucky, and lastly bargain for almost everything, especially at markets.

There's heaps more, you'll have a blast and you're making me really wanna go again!

Wow, I was there for a while, en route to Thailand. Unfortunately I remember very little. It's very crowded, there is tons of advertising everywhere. It must be said twice, tons of advertising everywhere! Second the opinion of checking out your wares before buying. Hmm, go to Thailand- it's one of my most favourite countries to visit. Yep, that was useless advice. Ok, I envy you your trip. Enjoy every minute. Buy lots, mail it home and you'll be getting it about 2 months after you've come home.

Reason.
