From www.thelema.net/:
"Barbelo was the name honored by the so-called Barbelites. It was stated by Irenaeus that there existed many Barbelo-Gnostics and that their main center was situated in Alexandria. There are some scholars who claim that the name Barbelo is actually a Hebrew word that is tetra-partite and refers to the following 'Beings": Armodzel, the Father, or Great One; Orohaiel, Barbelo Herself, teh Light-Mother; Thabithai, the Son Beloved; and Heleleth, the Other, the Primal Man (Anthropos).
Sometimes identified with Sophia, Barbelo has attributes of Wisdom. She is depicted as the ageless and pure Spirit-daughter of the Highest Lord, his consort so to speak. She is a Universal Mother and/or Cosmic Concubine.
The practices of the Barbelites included borboristic rites. Pleasure and sensuality were accepted as normal and natural. Their practices included what might be termed (today) as Tantric and as Magicka Sexualis. A Barbelite text might be viewed in the lite of the information contained within the book The Hypostasis of the Archons." |
