1. Do you think that the Britain's growing connections with mainland Europe since WWII have been a good or a bad thing for its inhabitants?
I don't think anyone could realistically argue that it has had a negative act. Even ferocious nationalist like De Gaulle and Thatcher took a rule in deepening integration. Thatcher signed the Single European Act. The most significant effect has been the single european market. Don't have any figures to hand but I think it is a fact that this has been good for the economies of all participants.
2. Has the EU and the euro been a good thing for the rest of Europe? And what about those countries outside Europe?
Already answered that. Single European Market good for everyone. Less developed countries have benefited by wealth transfers from the other countries who were better placed to exploit the single market. Obviously cultural diversity and an opening of borders is good in so many ways apart from economic.
3. What do people think about the proposed enlargement of the EU (e.g. Poland, Hungary, etc)?
It rocks. Will involve at least some wealth transfer. A huge increase in the potential market for everyone. What next after that? Turkey? Russia? Morocco? |
