F2B = www.fadetoblack.com = Barbelith's less intellectual American cousin

lately, there's been some cross pollination going on between the two boards.....

so, you're in, utopia?

Kittie's going so I'm going, unless I fancy being rather lonely on November 9th. (Er, not that I wouldn't go anyway.) I've heard good things about South Street.

I see, I'm just a kittie-extension now, am I?

I wave a cheese frank in your general direction.

not a kittie extension, he just knows how pushy I am and assumed it would be easier to cave

or else that you couldnt possibly resist a chance to meet all these fine folks in the flesh.

and south street makes for some lovely shopping, particularly if you like shiny things and tattoos

Man, I think I need to move to Philly. Y'all'll have to visit The Mutter Museum and let me know if it's really as fucked-up as it looks like.

I will wager that, if everyone here is free and no vehicles are broken down, I'll be able to talk my friend who I've been trying to get on The 'Lith forever into going up there. And hopefully he'll, you know, take me along...

i'd love to meet you guys there, gridley, but i'm not sure if tats is very underage friendly on a saturday night (i'm counting down the days until i turn twenty-fucking-one [december 31 to be exact...]). i've only been there once, and it wasn't a problem, but i've generaly become a weeknight drinker as to avoid the weekend crowd/zealous bouncer situation (though i hold no grudge against the bouncer community--they're fine folks doing a job [what i mean to say is, they're very large]).

i'll swing by--if you see a long-haired fucking hippie touting an underage nj id getting thrown out onto the street--well, at least wave.

Right on we have a pledge of Deric and attempted Utopia.

Margin, you should at least come for a visit. The Mutter Museum is great, but no longer as fucked up as it used to be. About five years ago, they took a bunch of space away from the medical oddities and used it to do stupid displays like "What happens when the president gets sick?" There's still plenty of wicked cool stuff though. You've got Phineas Gage's skull with the iron railroad spike still sticking out of it. There a baby skeleton with a giant skull floating in a vat of green liquid that's haunted me for many a year....

oh, and Utopia. If you want to maximize your efforts, I make the following advice. Go a little early, before evening crowds start to gather. If you get there before 6:00 there's a decent (50/50?) chance there won't be a bouncer. Then I would go right upstairs and play pool for a bit without ordering a drink from the downstairs bar (where their more dilligent bartenders will be). Then, when they open the upstairs bar, you can take the chance. Plus, I can order drinks for you once I show up.

yeah, i think that was my battle plan. well, ok, i didn't have a battle plan. but i knew i'd get one, and when i did, i bet it would be quite similar to that one.

I'll see if I can make it over. Only a few blocks away from work which is good. South St. bouncers can be a bit pushy about id's, especially on Fridays when everyone descends on the place, so anyone a bit under 21 should take gridley's advice and get there early. It could always start there and go to other places like the New Wave (where Al doesn't check id), etc.

we can always move places if someone gets booted, we'll provide a cell phone number or two before the actual event

Also...if any of you happen to drive in, parking isn't too bad if you keep between 8th to Broad st. (14th) from Bainbridge and south of there towards Washington. Park all night around the Italian market and avoid dropping the excess cash and headaches.

On the Mutter Museum tip, everyone should go if they get a chance. You get to see the "Soap Lady", lots of abnormal jarred fetuses, the world's largest colon, and a lots of skulls, etc. Last I went there was an exhibit on objects that people swallowed. Good, if not creepy, fun.

all right, never did a barbemeet before but I figure recognizing each other might be slightly difficult, so here's the Audobon guide to picking me out of a crowd...

let's see.... 6'2 if I'm not slouching (but I'll probably be slouching), 33 years old, dark hair cut short, green eyes behind dark plastic frames, big old beer gut.... I've been told that my standard facial expression looks kind of mean and judgemental, but that's just a cosmetic accident. I'm actually rather nice. With any luck I'll be wearing jeans and a suede jacket. I'll have a paperback book about Islam with me, and I'll make sure it's prominently displayed.

I think the key info here is big bearded guy with glasses and a book about Islam.

narrows it down it bit...

if anyone else attending wants to post hints for picking themselves out of a crowd, I would encourage it.

Oh, fecksake... That's this weekend, innit? Goldarn it! I was thinking it was later in the month and hadn't checked the thread in a while. Looks like I'll be absentee yet again. Maybe if I got a car, I could follow through on these Barbe-meets for once!

I suppose it's still possible, maybe. Let me check up on Greyhound prices/times...

Bloomington, IN. I was talking to a friend of mine about going to the meet and he seemed cool w/it. Thing is, he's the one w/the car and he has to work saturday night. It's my fault for not keeping track of the date.

Posted a picture on the f2b thread but basically I've got short hair, glasses, 6'1", male and I'll be wearing a bright orange t-shirt with a joke about dot-coms on it.

PM me for mobile number if you're interested.

well, assuming Fridge and I don't try to kill each other with our psychic powers at this meet, it'll hopefully all happen again sometime (Philadelphia's the new London!), so we'll get Deric and Kittie out here yet.

Murray Hamhandler

Indeed. I have scads of time on my hands and people willing to get me out there. I will meet a 'Lither in person before I die!

Philadelphia's the new London? I guess I can believe that. What's London the new of?

And how was the intimate Fridge meet? I'd love to have gone, but I was doing something in Nashadelphia. I had a two year old's birthday party to enjoy. It was pretty wild - I got a sugar high and found myself watching The Rescuers Downunder, criticizing the bizarre switches of scenery from Uluru in a flower garden to desert to farmland to jungle to gorge to...

An excellent time. Bit like a blind date, but once I got over that all was well. Fridge and Kittie and excellent company (as was F2B's Hopefoot). We got to talk some Barbelith gossip, which I enjoyed far more than I should have. Also, it turns out the three of were something of a Zocher Appreciation Society and declared him brilliant in absentium.

And I think my nervousness made me talk too much.

London used to be the new Sydney, but now it's the new Johannesburg.

Yeah, shit was good. Much interesting conversationalising on all sorts of topics. We started fairly intellectual but soon degenerated into... something... probably about sex... and everyone was the sort of person I'd want to meet again. Shall definitely have to sort something out for the future, certainly now that I've identified a bus that gets me there.

The Beer That I Could Never Remember The Name Of left me with a ridiculous headache the next day, though, and I still have heatburn. Perhaps I should have eaten something apart from breakfast, a few cheese fries and half a corn dog.

gridley has met kazuo ishiguro, too

Im just sorry I arrived so late, and only arrived after the many unnamed beers.

but there wasnt too much of anything, only not enough shops still open to empty my wallet completely

I think hot dogs do very little to absorb alcohol. In fact, I wonder (quite unscientifically) if the nitrates in cheap hot dogs don't make you more likely to get hangovers (cause I had one too).

Oh, and Paulaner hefe-weizen was the unnamed beer.

w1rebaby
13:59 / 12.11.02
Ah yes, the nitrates. That would have been it. I had a headache and I sort of never get headaches from hangovers, so it must have been the nitrates.
