Oh my god yes. YES! It was one of the first things I watched (after Star Wars and The Muppet Movie) on our then high-tech top-loading VHS machine that was roughly the size of a hall table. And it was genius, at least inasmuch as I can remember back about 20 years. The hooting codpiece. The reinterpretation of "The Major-General's Song" that mentions M.A.S.H. and Star Wars. Garry McDonald's Clouseau-like chief of police! Fencing foils, not rapiers! The nonexistent production values. It was fabulous. I watched this far too much as a child.
And need I mention - again - TED HAMILTON! As The Pirate King! He rocked nuts. As did Prisoner's Maggie "The Freak" Kirkpatrick as Ruth. Makes complete sense. I SO wanted to be him when I was younger.
Younger. Pfft. He gets a galleon and a hooting codpiece! What else would you need?
FWIW, it pretty much borrowed from Pirates without aping it too much; obviously, the music was the most-borrowed bit. I think the story was that Atkins was some kind of worker at a place like Dreamworld where there was a pirate stunt show, or whatnot. McNichol was (if I recall correctly) a dorky girl with glasses who's hit on the head and the rest of the movie is her knocked-out fantasy. Except it's a musical, too. I seem to remember a really bad song about shagging that had lyrics like "Keep pumpin' - and blowin'!" in it. Set underwater, with that sort of feel that the Cure's filmclip for the remix of "Close To Me" had - bubbles on strings, that kind of thing. I think there's even fucked-up animation, too.
Loomis (you come out of hiding for this? is right - I feel like I really wanna see it - but know I could be horribly disappointed. It's a chance I'm willing to take.
Right, if I can find it at the video shop, you're getting transcriptions. I mean it.
Victory! We fight to win... Victory! Is ours again... we are the scourge of the land and seas - beastly pirates are we!
(Interesting tangent: the proper prod. of the G&S play came out at the same time - with Linda Rondstadt in lead and Kevin Kline as The Pirate King. Otto the pirate? Rock!)
Links: this page has lyrics and stuff on it. It's pretty hefty, includes a script, such as it is, and is basically worth a visit. It's also where I found out that it's coming out on DVD next year, reputedly.
Awwww yeah.
Any more? |
