Discovering the Invisbles: late, I know

I realise this is completely arse about face: I discovered Barbelith and then discovered the Invisibles. I've nearly finished the first volume - once I got over my linear prejudice - and I'm, like, mesmerised. And I keep thinking stuff like, oh, that's where that barbename comes from.

Tell me your best bit.

Issue 4, When Tom goes psycho on Jack to shock him out of his old ways and he lies there in the mind saying "I can cry if I want to can't I?"

The whole first series. I read it in one afternoon after it was first published and felt strange things happen in my brain.

But you're not a true fan until you've read the whole series while hanging upside down from one leg while Jamie Oliver does the 'scary dance' in front of you...

Lilith, you are not alone. I am also an Invisibles virgin.

I just bought three issues (the only ones the pitiful comic book store had).

I have only read 3 pages of issue #6 "The Girl Most Likely To". I felt kinda ill and had to put it down.

I am going to have to ease myself into this and go gently while I loose my Invisibles virginity.

Are you experiencing anything similar, Lilith?

Tell me your best bit.

I still think The Sweeney tackling Yog-SoThoth takes some beating in terms of pop-cultural headfuck..

I've only read two issues of The Invisibles; they were the only two I was willing to buy. I couldn't justify spending $7 on a comic book. I'll eventually get around to reading the entire series. I had a chance to pick up the first trade paperback a few years ago before I knew who this Grant Morrison guy was and I was turned off by the art. Ick. If I'm going to spend $20 on something, I want some pretty pictures to go with the interesting text.

I borrowed the first Invisibles collection off a fellow Barbelither, a few months into my Barbelith career... have to admit, was not and am not hugely inclined to read the others... comics don't generally do it for me, and the Invisibles is no exception...

And I don't understand the Jamie Oliver/Hanged Man reference, but it scares the beejeezus out of me anyway. Thank you, Lada.

If you ask me, this Morrison fellah was hopped up on goofballs. And I don't belive he's an Englishman, is he?

Favourite moment was when KM went down on Robin while she swigged champagne from the bottle.

I suppose I should have saved my money and just waited for Tipping the Velvet.

Issue 3 - [Second panel in the page. The first one is a shot of Tom's sillouette against the bright blue sky. And this page is the one that comes after the BLANK PAGE]

One of my favorite scenes: Dane Mcgowan, after being re-baptized by Tom O'bedlam, lies on the ground with a calm expression, the hint of a pacified smile showing in his face.

First time, I read it out of order due to availability of tpb's and back issues. I think it made more sense that way.

Personally, I liked the whole arc in vol.2 where Boy is getting de-/re-programmmed by the Discordian Cell 23 after stealing the Hand of Glory, and the whole "language trip" scene ("My tits spell anarchy").

Second favourite being where Jack and Fanny are dancing before the Harliquinade and Fanny says, "The poor are the world's best dancers".

Wonderful stuff. The first time its like a drug.

My favourite panel is King Mob, sitting atop a mountain in India, reciting the mantra, "I am as cool as Bruce Lee, I am as cool as Bruce Lee, I am as cool as Bruce Lee, I am as cool as Bruce Lee, I am as cool as Bruce Lee, I am as cool as Bruce Lee, I am as cool as Bruce Lee, I am as cool as Bruce Lee."

Well, it's prolly not my favourite, but it did make me piss myself, and it's spoiler free unless you know the context.

I love that life changing high! I had it when I was 16 and reading Sandman over and over and over, and got it from the Invisibles for the last half of 2000. Mmm!

I can't decide on a favourite bit. There are lines that jump out from my memory at random. Those are the best.

The issues where Lewis Brodie is after Fanny stick out.

Jill Thompson seems to enjoy drawing Brodie and Grant obviously loves the Professionals...

'Embarrassing isn't it, Love? The way cliches always turn out to be true? A gun is just a penis substitute.'

(last page #14, check it out.)

I read it from the start and I remember loving it and thinking it was going to be excellent and then we got to the "Arcadia" storyline and I realised it was going to be more than that.

Maybe I was uneducated in regard to what comics can be, but Shelley and Byron discussing Utopia just about did my head in.
