To date we have explored the ideas of using “fictional” characters as magical archetypes (i.e. The Simpsons, The Justice League of America, etc..) Let’s expand on this idea a bit more:
What other media images/characters do you incorporate into your magickal philosophies?
As promised to the Fool, I present one just such theory for your consideration.

The Gilliganomicon
Skipper: What’s wrong little buddy? Where have you been? We have all been worried sick about you!
Gilligan: Gosh Skipper, I had to take some time away from the others. I needed some time to think
Camera close up to Skipper whose face shows a mix of terror and surprise
Skipper: Who's talking in there, little Buddhi?
The Planetary Associations of the Castaways
To begin, let’s look at these characters as the Titans. My associations are:
Jupiter Mr. Thurston Howell III
SaturnMrs. Lovey Howell
Mars Skipper Jonas Grumby
Venus Ginger Grant
Mercury “Gilligan” (a.k.a. Willy)
Moon Mary Ann Summers
Sun Professor Roy Hinkley
The Planetary Couplings
When we watched Gilligan’s Island, we naturally paired up the males and females on the island:
Ginger / Skipper = Venus / Mars
Mary- Ann / Professor = Moon / Sun
Mrs. Howell / Mr. Howell = Saturn / Jupiter
And of course:
Gilligan / Gilligan = Mercury
Donald Tyson in New Millenium Magic that Mercury is the center of the magician’s universe. Not only is it the messenger, it is also a hermaphrodite… which was the reason why it was a) Gilligan’s Island and b) He couldn’t really be bothered with the women of the island.
Gilligan:…and tell me why I hear the same song in my head every seven days, Skipper? Why?
Gilligan’s Island of the Tonal - A Toltec Perspective
Carlos Castaneda in his exhaustive series of books concerning Toltec teachings or “ A Yaqui Way of Knowledge” , information passed down to him from his elusive mentor, the legendary Don Juan Matus. Castaneda presents the Toltec Model of Sorcery and is worth forther investigation should one feel inspired.
The Island: Don Juan taught Castaneda that there are two states: Manifest, which he named the Tonal which covers anything you can attach a name to
The Ocean: …and the Un-manifest – The Abstract – which was dubbed The Nagual Everything exists as potential in the formless void. Consider that each episode, the Ocean / Nagual would grant something to the Castaways allowing them to gain their potential freedom. ( Which is the goal of the Toltec path...) Consider again how many lost opportunities occurred due to the pettiness of the citizens of the Island.
The Household / Magical Groups: Castaneda presented four types of man in accordance to the cardinal directions.
North: The Man of Power. Power flows from the North.
East: The Scholar. The Man of Wisdom.
West: Dark, Man of Mystery, believes himself to be indispensable and in control. (ie: The most valuable team member)
South: The man of Action. The Nagual man.
It should be evident which male castaway fits into which direction. Just in case:
North = Skipper
East = Professor
West = Mr. Howell
South = The Nagaul Gilligan
The Women
Maiden, Mother and Crone.
Some would even dare,. Maiden, Mother and Whore.
The first instinct: Mary- Ann = Maiden
Mrs Howell= Mother
Ginger = Whore
But upon further thought, the revision:
Ginger= Maiden She may have been a tease but she never ended up with anyone
Mary – Ann = Mother – The nurturing motherly type
Mrs Howell = Whore – She was boffing the old guy for cash all these years.
The Castaways as Archetypes of Civilization
Gilligan = represents the Worker
Skipper = Military
Ginger = The Muse. All things EPIC, from poetry to acting.
Mary Ann = Agriculture
Professor= Science
Thurston Howell= Finance / Commerce
Mrs. Howell = Government
Plus the tales of the destruction of Atlantis, in which 7 escape death in order to rebuild civilization.

Time for a break from this, I do have more but I want to give you all a chance to post as well. So let’s hear your comments on the Gilliganomicon or please share any similar theories…
And we haven’t even touched on: How did 7 people fit onto that tiny boat? With all of the Howell’s clothes and furniture,at that? |
