The difference between a symbiotic and parasitic relationship seems to be the issue here; dog owners get benefits from their canine chums, such as companionship/affection (there was, I vaguely recall, a survey which showed that pet owners were less likely to suffer from depression. Or somesuch.), security (BEWARE OF THE DOG), practise with nurturing skills. In a parasitic relationship, one 'partner' generally loses out. Another rather pertinent symbiotic relationship we humans have is with various forms of plant, such as hops and grapes, where the 'benefits' supplied are in the form of intoxication, liver disease and dementia. Maybe Mr. DogHaterMan could write a little featurette about that. |
