"A Practical and Encyclopedic guide to Magical and Religious Symbolism".

Bill Whitcomb is responsible. Have any of you seen this? It's like a desk reference for the occult. I saw it at Barnes and Nobles and had to check it out (unfortunately, it was $24.95, and I needed money for drugs and my mother's birthday present, so I just walked out with it. As much as it interested me, it wasn't worth thirty bucks. Unethical, you say? Bah. Fortunately for me, my patron god is Hermes, the patron of thieves and travelers).

So lets give this thing a test, eh? Ask some questions about random aspects of the occult and we'll see if this thing is as encyclopedic as it's weight suggests. C'mon, it'll be fun. I know it has the I Ching table all drawn out, so it's a reasonable guess that the tree of life and the tarot are dealt with as well. So let's try to be a bit more obscure than that, yes?

Walked out with it? Book prices are raised because of stupid shit like that, but let's not get into that, shall we?

Who was Alphonse Louis Constant and what did he do?

I'd be interested to hear what it says about Enochian - and does it mention newish stuff like Chaos magick?

What was Papus' real name?

Too easy?

What was Alan Kardec's real name?

We can or not; I don't care. No doubt it raises prices. Looks like some vicious circle action. Thankfully, I don't give a shit.

....and so on, up to Model 91, The Enochian Watchtowers, Hierarchies, and Subaethyrs. Section III is titled "other systems" and includes alchemy, magical alphabets, deities, telesmatic images, literal qabalah, talismans, magic squares and sigils, frequently encountered magick herbs and plants, incenses and perfumes, attributions of various gems and minerals, and holy days and the yearly cycle. Section IV is a dictionary of esoteric terminology.

The dedication caught my eye: "This book is dedicated to all of those who sacrificed their wealth and social standing, their lives, and sometimes even their minds and souls in the search for knowledgee, especially Old Beastly Uncle Al, whose Liber 777 provided the seed and inspiration of this endeavor.

"I would also like to dedicate this work to Adupir, FDNUKNYZER, Garren, Kadmon Klorg, Styx's Mate and the other members of the Thealingamea."

This thing is full of pages upon pages of diagrams and models and god knows what else. I see this being very, very useful to a lot of people here. I hope the information is solid...

Now, with these examples, lets try again. Maybe something broader than a name.

I'd be interested to hear what it says about Enochian--

What about it? The models of the elements contain a diagram of the Enochian attributes (the divine names, the normal words, The supreme elemental kings and whatnot), and the book has a lengthy bit on the enochian alphabet and another on the language, and a bit on Dee's work with Enochian studies. As far as the Chaos magick stuff goes...don't see much, really. Several mentions of Chaos as the Void that is/is not, though. The term "chaos" pops up pretty frequently throughout the book.

The Magician's Companion and The Magician's Reflection are both fantastic books and are very useful things to have around for any Chaoites or Ecletic style people out there. I've been using both for years.

Alphonse Louis-Constant = Eliphas Levi's secret 'mild-mannered writer' identity, IIRC.

He at least should be in the book...

You should look up comparisons of the structure of various underworlds/ hells according to this or that ancient/ world culture or magick system. Why? Because I'm researching that nowadays and I'll find the book in a library system somewhere if it's worthwhile. (Libraries are one of the lesser-known substitutes for shoplifting. As an author, I am very much in favor of everyone buying books in first-hand shops for cover price if at all possible, and requesting then checking them out from the library if not.)

You can steal things from libraries, too.

But then you can never go back, unless you get a new identity.

It's (I think) easier than stealing from bookshops - a crime I find somewhat impressive, to my shame/furtherment.

I have successfully stolen books from bookstores just to prove I could. Then I took the books back and bought them. I did that with city magick.

Although when I steal Abbie Hoffman's "steal this book" it will be for real.

Should be but isn't. Under any name. At least, his name(s) isn't listed in the index anywhere.

Seconded. Highly.

The sequal (reflection) goes more into meta magickal systems, and guides to creating your own magickal systems. In essence, that is what chaos magick is all about: making up your own system that works for you.

I mostly like randomly thumbing through Companion, or scanning the index for juicy tidbits. That book can eat my brain for hours on end.

I really, really like this book. You can seriously just open it to a random page and start reading and not stop for an hour or two. There's a whole lot of information in here. I can't wait to get my hands on the Magician's Reflection.

Might I suggest The Key To It All- Vol 1 The Eastern Mysteries and Volume 2 The Western Mysteries. Fantastic books if you enjoy the Magicians Companion. Also, I can not reccomend New Millenium Magic by Donald Tyson enough.

Trust me.
