Police arrest medicsat demo
Said jailed street medic Eowyn Rieke, MD, MPH, “We were trying to stay behind the crowd to watch for injuries. At several points we wanted to leave the park to get a better view of the scene and because of the heavy police presence, but the police would not let us leave. Gradually they started closing in and arresting everyone.”
Reike said that she and her medic team had treated one woman for a head injury and broken nose after she was hit twice by police batons earlier in the march. Reike said that the police would not give the medics access to the patient and the woman’s friends were eventually able to bring her to the medic team for treatment. The team treated the patient, and because of the seriousness of the case, called for an ambulance.
“Medical volunteers are being targeted for their politics,” said Ace Allen, who has worked as a street medic for over two years. “I feel angry that once again people who were out there to help, clearly working as medics, have been subject to police repression.”
