Bush - The Third Most Popular President of all Time???

Bush - along with Kennedy and Lincoln - has recently been voted to be the third most popular president of all time. Those who were responsible for this result, presumably from a combination of short term memory and an unhealthy fixation on the current president, appears to have forgotten all that was done for them by Mr Washington, and the work done by Regan, and the endless toil suffered for them by that loveable little Nixon *grin*...

I appreciate that Bush has given the populous the meat for which they're howling, but he's been in office only for a short time and hasn't yet proven himself in the arena of world politics, certainly not enough to be voted the most popular of all time, in my humble opinion.

Just curious as to other people's views of this...

Understandable though, the mechanism that's in operation. Thatcher was in the shit until the Falklands too and thereafter walked on water, but not forever.

Just one of those times when you have to be content to march to the tune of a different drummer.

You're right Zocher - a hideous, unfortunate fact of life. The guy's a complete cretin, and I hope he chokes to death on a petzel.

damn, well, at least he isn't beating JFK.... yet!

So, how hard is it for an american to move to England anyway?

I just can't believe this shit is real. For every one American who loves him I know about ten people who hate him. Of course, I live in a bubble so it's not too surprising but still.

On the other hand, I can't recall ever canonizing the memory or Reagan, and yet here we have Reagan Airport, calls for Reagan to grace currency, etc. etc.

And where did you get this information from? WHO voted in this poll? (Couldn't have been US citizens – Bush is living proof that our votes don't count!)

Do you have a link so I can view this travesty for myself?

It doesn't surprise me...let's remember that his approval rating is still above 75% and, after all, we're at war. He hasn't thrown up on anyone or done anything really stupid, so the people who are polled have no reason not to like him.

I look for it to drop slowly over the next year or so as the daily grind of news cycles eventually turns toward him.

...but think about the poll...most popular presidents? Who cares...it's like picking out the best toilet bowl deodorizer...

On this question of Bush's mandate - I thought you might be interested in this page: Right-wing myths exposed

The first big graphic on the page is a map of America coloured 'by simply mixing red, blue and green for each state, with the ratios equal to the percentage that Bush, Gore and Nader received in the 2000 election.'

You can so clearly see from the shades of purple that the idea of Bush having won all the votes in the 'great red heartland' is hogwash...

Good point there, Kit-Kat. How quickly people forget that, Supreme Court chicanery aside, Bush lost the popular vote by over five hundred thousand votes. Yet the mainstream press would have us believe that the vast majority of public would follow Bush off the cliff like a bunch of lemmings if he told them to do so.

I don't put much stock in polls. If a giant amoebic blob (or Al Gore for that matter) was president now, he'd still be the third most popular president. Plus, you have to remember the fact that our educational system is a joke and most americans don't know jackshit about their own history.

Don't believe me? Ask a random person if they can name the last ten U.S. presidents.

Fearmongering, jingoism and a phony war aginst an invisible enemy have worked for the time being, but I expect that Bush's approval ratings will slowly and steadily drop. The public is not only fickle, but has a extremely short attention span. A year from now, all of the pundits will be asking themselves "What happened to the most popular president in U.S. history"?

Yeah, but that's easy, they're all within living memory of people around us. The first 10 is much more likely to get you blank stares.

Young Hickory, the Napolean of the stump...

I kind of like the idea of a wrasslin' president, which is why I like Lincoln. I keep seeing this in my head:

Presidential aide: "Mr. President, this speech of yours is utter shit."

Lincoln: "Eat it, sissy!" <puts aide in the Boston Crab>

Bush has that wonderful sense of humor though. I mean he's not really serious about this whole "Axis of Evil" thing is he?

I've always pictured Lincoln to be more of the type to use a sudden, brutal finisher rather than a submission hold. Possibly some variation of the Stone Cold Stunner (renamed the Lincoln Railsplitter, of course).

Lincoln Railsplitter! Genius!

Truth be told, I just like any scene involving someone putting someone else in a Boston Crab, which is probably the greatest name for a wrestling move ever.
