The Big Scary

Okay, scary stories - specifically of the horror type. Fantasy, fiction, folklore or fact, I don't care, all I know is I want to hear them - the weider, the more fortean, the more uncategorizable the better. If you can't be bothered to recount can you link to somewhere that can? If you can't link can you point?

This ain't a creative exercise, it's an attempt to get a damn good scare, and from my POV it's a chance to do some research for a project I may be planning with a couple of mates.

Try this guy's blog. There's some pretty scary stuff going on in his life. I read it yesterday night, had all sorts of scary dreams.

You're a bad man, Jade.

I'd add some online Ligotti to that recommendation.

Short stories: those of Patrick McGrath (collected in "Blood and Water"), and also those of Edgar Allen Poe, who is still scary. MR James isn't too bad either for those old shocks. Google for them.

I happen to know that Pranny and Friendly Boy (the silent partner in all this) already own a fair amount of Poe and are really into MR James, so that's no good. But cheers.

Bentley Little's The Store is funny, in a horrifying way, or very scary in a sort-of funny way.
It's about a chain store, like WalMart, moving into a small southwestern town. And killing it. And turning their employees into cult-like zombies. And, well, there are also the Night Managers. Inhumanly pale skin, black leather overcoats.
And the CEO has too many bones in his arms.

Cheers guys. Agree on the Poe and James point - both good. More interested in Folklore (old and new), anyone got any links?

Little Red Riding Hood in its original form is quite scary - well I think so anyway - actually a lot of the fairy tales are.

Well, for the new stuff there's a nice urban legends page with a good horror section

www.snopes.com

other than that, I can tell you that the news scare the crap out of me lately

Good source for mythology (and a damn fun site, too) is Big Myth. Flash animation versions of global creation stories. Some of which are pretty weird. The Ceramese one is scary.
