THATCHER'S BACK!

Not Here Still

She will not die!

And I'm scared about her backing more war. Although not too fucking surprised...

There's only one man who can stop her!

Billy Bragg where are you?

Well - her hawkish opinions are far more likely to be received well in the US than they are here; she's always been attuned to the Republican party, and moreover I think she is generally held in greater esteem in America. Whereas if she had written that article in the Telegraph, it would probably have been dismissed as attention-seeking drivel.

yes, i seem to remember her rant a couple of years back about single mothers being rather laughed at.

as one who remembers/survived thatcherism, i will never feel entirely settled while this woman stalks the earth.

What scares me is that many of those who voted for her in the past now think she's insane, and yet she gets a big hand abroad.

I love the part where she parrots the Republicans' cant about not getting involved in peacekeeping or nation building. Yeah, we'll make the mess and let someone else clean up after us. No hostility engendered there...

Gawd hadn't thought about the Thatch in years...
still waiting for the raddled old hag to be taken to The Hague for her war crimes.

Hideous, scary, evil, Nazi, cold, callous, did I say evil?, inhuman BITCH!!!
Although, I always prefer to refer to her as "Baroness" Thatcher, just because it sounds so much more villainesque than "Maggie"...
I mean... "Dave" Vader just wouldn't have been so sinister, would he?
But yeah... where was I... did I say "evil" yet?

Thank god Thatcher's back. Please, somebody, put her back in charge of the kingdom, so that her oppression will churn our a whole new crop of beautifully angry brilliant comic book writers.

You can of course promptly overthrow her and mutilate her corpse as soon as Vertigo gets them all safely imported to America.

Bitch stole my Milk at school.

I always remember a picture in a collection of graffiti, thousands of people winding over the horizon to jump up and down on her grave.

Grrr puts me in a bad mood just remember how she sounded, smug arrogant cow.

But on the other hand Red Ken is still alive and kicking as opposed to her who merely lurches along in an undead existance in newspaper columns.

Anyonelse else remember 'comic strip presents GLC' :-)

a cousin of mine used to work at 10 downing street during the thatcher years. he's a lefty - during the miners' strike he gave me a fabulously juvenile poster of a policeman goosestepping around a coalmine - and spoke of people hiding under tables during the westland affair. it was grimly satisfying, he said, to see her leave for the last time, in tears.

mother still will not allow thatcher's voice to be heard in the house.

Now, I wouldn't normally say this kind of thing, but: really? God, that sounds great. Just great.

As an American I only remember that she was Reagan's best buddy, and that by the time she left, England was referred to as a semi-fascist state by comic writers.

But it's strange to me that those old right wing icons of the 80's engender such love in people. Reagan is getting treated as if he were Lincoln here, with airports and monuments and the like. Even the people on the left don't treat Jimmy Carter that well, and let's face it, the man is amazing for how much he has done for the world since leaving office.

So...how is she being treated by the media there?

i get the impression that thatcher is seen with rather too much affection - the old adversary, that the battles of the 80s were no more important than a chess game. but this is the media's view, i think, that she's gone and it doesn't matter anymore.

i saw how this country changed under her, and i expect some of the people who lost their livelihoods, with no hope of ever getting anything back, as a direct result of her policies, would view her in a different light. as i say, mother still gnashes her teeth at the mere mention of the woman.

It depends on the paper, really, but I think it ranges from 'right-thinking stalwart ex-leader' through 'toothless, senile old bat' and (as sfd says) 'old adversary' to 'Archon'...

I would say that 'toothless, senile old bat' probably has the upper hand, but then I was very young during most of the eighties and as a result am less riled about it.

I'm realizing that, although I don't really know much about Thatcher and what she actually did to engender so much hatred towards her, I'm feeling much the same towards Dubya as I've gotten the impression those over the pond feel towards Thatcher. I didn't understand before, but I do now.
