Is it just me or is "you remind me" or whatever the fuck it's called on the radio ALL THE TIME. Whenever I walk past a radio, it seems to be playing this song.

I've been through the trajectory of "urgh, what the fuck is this" to "oh shit, I was humming that awful record" to "it's actually okay" to "no it fucking isn't" to "let's do a spanish inquisition on Chad Kroeger".

Isn't it interesting what unwanted familiarity with a record can do?

And I wouldn't mind if it had only been for a couple of months, as is usually the case. But it isn't - it's more like ALL FUCKING YEAR.

Is this supposed to drive us all to drink?

Yeah, it's like an MOR version of Papa Roach and the like.

For older people you understand. Who used to like the rock, but can't quite be down with 'the kids'.

That "Hero" song he does from Spiderman is 40 times worse than the "you remind me" one.

I find it hilarious that nobody noticed, despite THAT song, which is irritating and wrong but not-entirely-dreadful, that Nickleback ARE entirely dreadful.

Many people went and bought "Silver Side Up" on the basis of that song. Many people bought the older, worse albums on the basis of that song.

And then they tell me they're surprised that it's all shit!.

Like, DUH.

Yep, the band that gave horseshit a bad name. Every time this shite comes on the radio it just makes me fucking livid. There's no fucking call for it at all.

This totally confirms it. Nickleback are a completely adult-who-want-to-be-down-with-tha-kidz phenomenon.

I haven't heard them since I went back to school. My social life is wall-to-wall Neptunes fun cool groovyness. OK, so there's people who don't like that, but they don't have the stereo. One day those people will learn to love Hot In Herre... IT'S FIFTH FUCKING WORD IS FUCKING "BODACIOS"*!! HOW CAN THAT BE BAD?!?!

No, wait... that's not on topic. What IS on topic is the fact that, upon buying Q last week because I have to analyse their soulless style of advertising *cough* reviewing for English Language, I discovered that, apparently, Nickleback are the new grunge. It's ture, Corey "I'm in fucking Slipknot" Taylor says so. They're bringing the spirit of Cobain back for a new generation, but putting a possitive spin on it. And leather trousers, a stadium light show, high production values, preeny pruned hair and a soulless drive for CORPORATE MONIES.

Thank you Mr. Slipknot Man. It's all so clear and sensible now...

*or however the fuck you spell it

pin - you are absolutely correct. Why would you ever, ever, ever, ever listen to Nickelback if you had one Neptunes song. The Williams' are fucking rerouting the nerve system of pop itself!

Why has 'herre' got two r's though? The song starts: 'Good gracious, ass is bodacious' no less. IT IS FUCKING BRILLIANT. These people have me liking the new USHER SINGLE, FOR GOD'S SAKE. And N*Sync, and Justin Timberlake - I feel like a bloody schoolgirl, before their instantly recognisable, always brilliant P.O.P.

Have you heard 'Recognise' by Ol' Dirty Bastard? It's great.
Have you heard 'Caught Out There' by Kelis? It's great.

And so on, and so on...

Here's a challenge... name a bad thing by the Neptunes.

Oh, apart from the N*E*R*D album with live instrumentation - good one boys! I want slick samples please, in future.

Did they do that Beyonce single? I'm sure they did - it's fucking tree-men-doss.

Weren't Nickelback signed by Fred Dersch. I remember hearing about a singer that he signed and then created a band for. Though may be that was Puddle of Mud, always get those two confused.

One of them has a new single that reminds me of the Offspring, but with none of the things that make the Offspring kind fun, in a mindless skate punk, before it got into Green Day/Blink 182, kind of way. Nuff said...

BTW, thanks to Lyra for confirming that others suffer from the "oh shit, I was humming that awful record" problem. I feel a lot better about myself now.

Sorry, you don't get to feel better about yourself that easily. If you raped your gran and then found out someone else you knew had done it too, it would still be wrong.

If you find yourself humming Nickelback or any other plodrock output, just remember Kylie. Say aloud just one lyric of hers and see how quickly the entire song unravels in your head, banishing all angsty rock in favour of mindless pop.

It always works for me.

Damn you, pin. I want to be 16 and listening to Nelly in a 6th form common room. From where I'm standing, that looks like heaven.

Oh wait, I remember 6th form common rooms. Even Nelly can't redeem them...

More hated song than anything by Nickleback at the moment:

Puddle of Mudd, and "She Fucking Hates Me".

Oh. God. Who do they think they ARE?!?!?!? I mean, the whiteness of the singer's teeth is scary enough, but this... it's just, appalling.

It's redeemed, however, by the new Liberty X single. Mantronix cover or no Mantronix cover, it's still pretty good. Mainly because of the bassline. Sheesh, four years ago, I'd never have thought I'd be talking about pop like that...

In my sixth form the radio 1, top ten playlist wankers ran the fucking stereo. Just couldn't be bothered to explain (for the billionth time) why house music and hip hop weren't "weird"....after a while that shit got very boring. Fucking village hicks.

Hey Lyra, any chance of changing the name of this thread so that new people don't come past and think we're a bunch of complete lamos?

And remember, Grand Funk Railroad and Cream existed at the same time as the Stooges and the Velvets. Have faith in rock n' roll, children..

Puddle of Mudd, and "She Fucking Hates Me".

That's the song I was talking about. It's Puddle of Mudd, huh? Like I said I can't tell them apart.

'Herre' has got two r's cuz that's how they talk down in the countrified South where Nelly lives, where there are no buildings except ones made out of bits of twig and everyone eats grits three times a day. Or something.

pin, you are righteous, but surely you've forgotten the "I was like -" at the start of that song? Which makes 'bodacious' the seventh or eigth word, depending on if you think he says 'is'. I think the next line - "Flirtatious, tryin' to show patience" is possibly even better though.

Sadly The Neptunes are not completely infallible if you seek out some of their less well-known work - I'm also not too impressed by the Beanie Man/Janet single and I'll be interested to be hear what people think of LL Cool J's new single, which is produced by them and sounds verrrrry lazy (not in a good way) - it's basically just a re-write of 'I Need Love' with some Neptunes sounds we've heard before stuck on. The Justin Timberlake tune is awesome though, and when you look at all the other amazing stuff they've done this year - Beyonce's 'Work It Out', the 'Boys' remix for Britney, NORE's 'Nothin', 'Pass The Courveoisier', Clipse's 'Grindin' not to mention some of the amazing other stuff on that album, like 'Young Boy' - it's clear that the Neptunes have DOMINATED 2002.

Can we change this thread title again, to 'Terrible Corporate Rock V Brilliant Shiny Pop'?

The Falcon
23:57 / 26.09.02
Absolutely, le fly. I am responsible, in part, for the shift on this thread, but it's more entertaining this way.

Yes, the LL and Beenie singles are pretty poor - I was unaware they were Neptunes hits, as they didn't have that recognisable snare'n'bass, which seems (possibly) to have reached its' apotheosis on the new Usher (I still cannot believe I'm saying this - Usher) single.

And yet, I think some wrongheaded youngsters might have got the idea that Nickelback, Muddle of Pudd and the like are somehow more real/better than Nelly & Co. - because they're more white, and have guitars, etc. Someone ought to go around schools informing them that this is incorrect, and they (if this is the case) are in fact their dad listening to Cream instead of Motown - oops.

The Neptunes are fucking great.

Who produced that awesome Lisa Lopes (R.I.P.) single, 'Block Party', anyone? Also, credit must go to Timbaland and Missy for paving the way, and ONLY redefining pop and swingbeat (or whatever it is you call it these days) along the road.

And Brandy 'What About Us' - Pete Rock/Darkchild, is it? That's what it seems to say at the end, anyway.

What was on the stereo? NICKLEBACK. WHOLE ALBUM. ALL OF IT. The sick fucks...

Okay, this thread emphasises the incredible need for file-sharing in this world.

Not because of any copyright issues, or civil liberties, or any of that shit. So that someone can say "have you heard..." and you can listen to something by the band, rather than have to rely on the fucking radio to bring you new music.

I don't listen to music radio any more, because the only stuff I can get, apart from a few pirate hip hop stations in my old place, is absolute wank. Radio 1? Kiss FM? Do me a favour. I can't get XFM, and even then a lot of that is egg.

(not totally off-topic reply, as this threadlooks like a Neptunes oriented one)
i totally agree about LL & beenie/janet being so poor.
now, i doesn't surprise that much. damn, we talk about people who took the world over with their brilliant conception of composition in their poppy/r'n'b/hip hop point of view.
now, even if i found good things in nerd or some others brilliants tracks they put their fingerprint on, aren't this guys quickly being boring ? i mean, okay, the typical Neptunes snare thing was cool for a few months, as their kind of pop/lazylectro treatment for others artists, but aren't these guys looks like doing the (already) same old shit ?

bio k9
09:22 / 30.09.02
Sure its the same old shit but, no, its not getting old yet. And who cares if the Neptunes give LL a shit beat anyway?

Completely unrelated to anything: someone told me Dre was producing Rakims next album...anyone else hear that? God, I hope its true.

Regrettable Juvenilia
10:11 / 30.09.02
What we really ought to be hoping is that Dre will 'executive produce' the album and leave the actual beat-making to his more talented minions, like DJ Quik, who produced 'Addictive' and thus gave Rakim his finest hour in years. "Thinkin' of a master plan..."

June: The 'Tunes seem to be doing too things at once at the moment - on the one hand, moving forward and making beats that sound very different to their trademarked snare/perv-synth sound (eg 'Work It Out', 'Grindin', arguably 'Nothin' and 'Pass The...') whilst also knocking out very obvious, even cliched Neptunes productions, presumably for the dollar (you could even argue that as good as 'Hot In Herre' is, it falls into this category). As long as they keep the first one up (and it's really noticeable that their best beats are often given to their favourite artists), I won't get sick of it.

I heard Clipse's 'Grindin' for the first time the other day, and it sounded pretty rad-i-cal to me, for a single at least. I've heard Rza do one track slightly similar on Cappadonna's first (only?) album.

Naysay the Neps if you want, but that Timberlake single is daym! fine.

here's something that could be of interest for flyboy, biok9, or others bad music lovers... come on guys, just kidding here (really).
gilles peterson versus the netpunes, hotdammit !
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/media/g2/urban/gilles_meets_nerd.ram

and Fly, even if it's "presumably for the dollar" that the guys are doing such things (and, of course, in all these works, there must be some good and some not so good stuff, uh), it doesn't give 'em an excuse, for me at least : call me naive-utopist-integrist-whatever, but money in art will never be a very brilliant reason to abuse my ears, grrrrr.
