I've been reading Tad Williams' Otherland series. Otherland, without spoilerizing too much, is this unbelievably high tech series of VR worlds, virtually indistinguishable from 'actual' reality. They are each owned by one hugely rich person, who is then lord/lady of all they survey. The worlds range from a version of ancient Egypt, where the owner is an all powerful Osiris, to an entomologist's dream, where humans are tiny in relation to their environment and giant bugs are everywhere, to a land where Neandertals and cave hyenas still exist. So, my question is - if you could create your own VR paradise, to experience things you couldn't in 'real life', or as a means to study things close up (like the bug land) in a way you couldn't in RL - what would you create, and what would you do with it?

This reminds me of an episode of Star Trek (stop groaning! - it's the font of all wisdom) where Pike, the Captain of the Enterprise pre-Kirk, has been terribly injured. Spock breaks all the rules to help him get back to a planet where he can spend the rest of his life hallucinating/dreaming that he is fit and healthy again. VR without the big glasses.

I have two VR type places, only one I can write about here (the other is going into a story): it's actually pretty Star Trekky anyway and involves flying a spaceship which has the real life problems of long term space travel (gravity/physical problems) conveniently sorted out. Just going and exploring and never coming back.

Of course the problem with this would be that I might not want to come back. Why be back in back old reality if something this realistic existed? That's why I wouldn't do it if it was offered me. You'd never see or hear from me again (and that would never do!).

A VR world which would basically be the same as the Star Wars universe only XXX rated.

What would I do with it....

I have two words for you 'Jedi sandwich'

I have two words for you 'Jedi sandwich'

Well, that's killed breakfast.

Myself, I would like to wake up every morning by applying a Sledge-O-Matic to the skull of that thing occupying the Executive Mansion. Then I'd beat Cheney like a pinata. Just before lunch I'd wipe my ass on Jesse Helms' face, then forcefeed pork to Joe Lieberman (which would actually be the roasted carcass of Ariel Sharon). Then a nap. In the afternoon I'd dissolve the United States as a political entity, and open all borders. Finally I'd legalize the herb and make every man, woman and child take a monster hit, then I'd sit back and watch the fun.

What? You said anything.

Vladimer - I fear that shitting all over Helms, Cheyney, Sharon et al. would lose it's punch (tho' still be fun) if you knew it was VR. Oh, to do it in real life...

I've been pondering making some epic piece of fiction based on a vaguely similar principle for absolutely aaaggeesss .. totally fascinating idea, though I think I'd like to concentrate on what happens when the technology fucks up and stuff starts spilling from one world to another and dreams become nightmares and people discover ways to move between them and so forth..

But to return to the topic in question, I think I'd quite like to live in an environment where all of my favourite noise-rock albums were transformed into kinda textured, solid 3(or more) dimensional things which could be explored and experienced and lived in.. it would have different settings for Loveless and Daydream Nation and Psychocandy and Yerself is Steam and so on.. yeah, living inside music, man .. faarrrooouutt...

My paradise would be a world I could set to different times (1200s, 1800s, 300bce, etc.) and then I would travel through it all walking and riding camels and whatnot. Mmm..

I'd like an exact copy of the world as it exists right now. A 3D model, accurate down to the last atom. It would be a working model which, if left to its own devices, would perform in exactly the same way as the original, ie the same laws of physics would apply and everything would have the same mass, dimensions etc. However, I'd have the ability to manipulate the model, or any single part of it, in any way I see fit: direct physical changes ("move that forest over there"), changes to physical laws ("gravity works in reverse") and changes to parameters ("reduce gravity by 50%"). I would also be able to control the flow of time, so I could run everything backwards, forwards, freeze it, fast-forward etc. And I'd want an Instant Reset button, too.

Three main reasons for wanting this:

Exploration. I'm a nosy bastard, and this would be perfect for indulging my fantasy of exploring the world at leisure without being challenged, injuring myself or cocking things up for anyone else. I'd want it to be as realistic but accessible as possible, so the only changes I'd make would be to remove human life and have all doors and windows unlocked. I'd start local and wander about wherever my whim takes me; maybe jump on a train, run it up the line and stop off at all those interesting looking factory yards and scrap heaps and so on. Poke about in a few back gardens, houses, you know the sort of thing. Sounds dull, I know, but I've got a thing for places that just sit there all day being ignored by everyone. Once I'd got bored of that (if ever) I would move on to the big cities, the landscapes, the libraries and secret documents etc.

Research. What better place to build and test stupid ideas, or to see large scale "what would happen if...?" events in action. The ability to speed up time would be particularly useful here.

Fun. Endless possibilities, both creative and destructive.

Maybe something "McKenna-esque" where you could talk/sing 3D objects into being, "behold your thoughts", cavort with DMT elves, etc. Or something along the line of "Time Bandits", popping into different eras and myth-scapes through portals you have to discover, be in the "right place at the right time" to use. Or an anime pocket universe to play in.
