From this BBC story

quote: Prosecutors sought to extradite him on two counts of falsifying an application for a US pilot's licence, saying these were "holding charges" while they investigated his alleged role in terrorism.

But after five months a district judge gave Mr Raissi conditional bail as no terrorism charges had been brought, and were not likely to be brought in the near future.

Those two counts according to Mr Rassai's lawyer were failure to disclose an injured knee on his renewal application (though it was disclosed on previous applications) and failure to disclose a conviction for theft dating back to Mr Rassai's teens.

In the UK I believe the police have 48 hours to make charges after arrest.
The already quite draconian Provention of terrorism act allows 30 days. This guy was locked away on trumped up charges for 5 MONTHS and the US was *still* seeking his extradition whilst they attempt to find evidence.

So, the question i have is this: How much leeway should the FBI (or anyone really) be given in prosecutring the war against terror. In This case at least it seems that the war on terror has become a war of terror itself, or am i being naieve?

shhhh....if they hear you, they can arrest you for conspiricy to terror...and hold you for 5 months....

to the anti-terror forces, it's a crusade(sic). i'm sure most so called "terrorists" would consider their acts much along the same lines.

terrorism must be difined by the victims, not the perpetrators. i am terrified, so it is terrorism.

Not Here Still

Guardian interview with Lofti Raissi here.

I've held back from talking about this for a few days because what I have to say would just degenerate into an incoherent rant. And I'm afraid it still will.

What the FUCK are the FBI playing at?

From the article:

When he eventually appeared in Bow Street magistrates court, US authorities said he would most likely be charged with conspiracy to murder and could face the death penalty.

They said that he had personally trained four of the hijackers who orchestrated the September 11 attacks, including Mohammed Atta, and that they had evidence, including video and telephone calls.

The video turned out to be a webcam shot of Lotfi with not a hijacker, but his cousin.

The implications of this case are very worrying.

It appears that the FBI are so willing to get someone- anyone - in the frame vis September 11, they are willing to get this man placed in jail for five months with no evidence other than a webcam shot.

It worries me that the security services in America are willing to lie to get results. It doesn't surprise me - it's happened before - but it does offend me.

There is some potential for leeway in the war against terror which, while I would not necessarily agree with, I could concede may be necessary.

But getting the wrong man locked up on lies, just to get results? That's fucking sick.

Plus, of course, it points to the fact that the FBI know jack shit as to who the person they claim Raissi was really is, which scares me more.

American security services don't seem to be very good at their job at the moment. They are more interesting in appearing to get reults than in actually getting those results.

You have to question the efficency of a security service which warns people to look out for 'terrorists on the loose' who are already in prison.

[edited because, yup, it was an incoherent rant]
