In Cardiff, miss broadband...

So I'm in Cardiff- it's got a lot of cement and that makes me feel better than I do with my surroundings in Hertfordshire. No cable broadband though and it's evil to have to trek to the library to use the internet. Evil I tell you.

However - £14.99 for 128k broadband a month student package. Should I go for it? My housemate might cover half the costs. Opinions please...

Also is anyone out there from these parts and do they want to go for a drink?

The important thing would be to make sure the might is a shall but that if they can't that you would still be able to cover the costs. I remember from my student days all about best intentions and whatnot...

If you don't you will have less distractions at home and so possibly get more work done... but won't have as many people to talk to at 2am.
Or maybe being restricted to public access will make you go to the library more?

You like cement?

Hmn. Broadband, as far as I can tell, is bad for work. I have, like, super-dupa broadband in my room again from Sunday... and it's just worse, I tell you. You think I post a lot at the moment? It's going to get worst.

RE: student broadband package - who's that from? Is that ADSL? It's just you need to be wary of dirt-cheap ADSL pacakages from resellers who are going to collapse in six months time. Remember the 0800 boom/bust thing, 0800 providers going under left right and centre? If not, be careful. Also: is it worth it considering you're only in cardiff for what, six, seven months? Broadband packages are typically 12months minimum contract.

And yes, at 2am, you do have, like, the whole Internet to talk to. Except... half of them don't speak English, and most of them I don't want to talk to. And Real Friends are often more handy .

It can't get much worse, we still have the posting limits

Hi Janina, nice to meet ya t'other night. I'd say get it if you've got a cd burner then you can download tons of music. I was very impressed with Bear telling me about being barred from his BT Contract for excessive use. 4000 hours, excessive?

Well they did say unlimited I should have read the small print though.

Anyway £14.99 a month does seem like a really good deal, I'd go for it but then I'd probably end up never going out and watching downloaded episodes of Buffy...

I pay NTL £14.99 per month for my 128 broadband, and yes, it's definitely worth it if you don't mind loosing days of your life downloading just about everything that can be downloaded (it's amazing how much downloadable material suddenly becomes desperately needed as soon as you rid yourself of a 56k dial-up ).

Well they did say unlimited. I should have read the small print though

What exactly is the small print there? I'm just curious as I'd have assumed that even a company of BT's excessivly profiteering status would still be legally obliged to ensure that their anytime service was available at any time.

Well its unlimited but it states in the fine print that you shouldn't use auto-reconnect which I did so they banned me, but I was moving out anyway so it wasn't much of a problem and I did get away with it for months.

BT do that on a regular basis with their dial-up - it's not actually "anytime", loads of people have problems with that - but I didn't know they did it for broadband too.

Maybe I should stop downloading ISOs of Red Hat Linux on my parents' BT broadband then...

...nah

It's NTL... it's a 9 month package. I think it's worth it except I have a dissertation to write this year. Hmmm.

My housemate has season's 1 to 6 of Buffy on video anyway. Last term I watched 1 to 3 and I've just started on 4 but think I might watch the last Tara episode tonight because I was gutted when she died. Unfortunately I also have to buy a memory card for my PS2 so even if broadband is an option it may have to wait.

Ms J: Is your dissertation entitled "Wasting time on the net: New culture or load or arse"?
If it is, get it, and we can all help you!

Nope, more along the lines of Gender and Sexuality influence fashion just as fashion influences cultural perception of gender and sexuality blah blah...

*see me stick my tongue out at you*

But I only have 5 hours of compulsory study time because of my dissertation so it might as well be called that.
