DVD question?

Sorry if people feel that this is an inappropriate forum for this question but I'm pretty sure there are people here who can help me out.

I've decided to buy myself a DVD palyer. I don't know n awful lot about them but I'm looking for a multi-region player with excellent picture quality and reliability. Now you can't get multi-region players in the high street shops in dear old blighty so I'm looking to probably order over the internet.

So does anyone have any reccomendations about a). DVD players and b). where to get them?

I'm not all that interested in hacking high street models as I'm worried about them locking in region and I'm pretty much technically incompetent.

Any help much appreciated.

Dude: You so can get region free ones over here. Go to Richer Sounds. We bought a few for where I work - you make sure you ask for a region free one, some of the cheaper ones cost more region free - and in the case of the ones we bought, we just entered a keypad hack et voila: working region free. Richer Sounds are good - nice equipment, good prices. If you're after quality, I've heard some people swear by the Pioneer, especially the 444, which is between £149 and £199.

On the net, Techtronics are probably the best place to buy - but region free is all over the high street; just not Dixons/Argos et al.

Not so. My brother and I bought our dad an Alba DVD108 from Comet for about £70. Turns out that it's multi-region.

Have a look here for a list of players that can and/or will play all regions.

As to which one to buy, it all depends on your budget but to get a pretty good all round player that would be suitable for most people, you shouldn't need to spend more than £150-£200.

I'm personally using a Pioneer and I think it's great.

Cheers guys, much appreciated.

Not looking to pay much more than £200. I keep hearing Pioneer are good.

Paleface I did have a look at the 444 but I couldn't find one for less than £299, bit rich for my blood. Also are those the ones that can record onto DVD? Is that any cop? I had been told that you can only record for about an hour, is that the case?

Anyway there's a richer sounds near me, I think I'll give them a go.

I forgot to mention, when you buy make sure you check that whichever you choose will play Region 1 RCE (Region Coding Enhanced) titles. A lot of new Region 1 discs are using this now and not all multi-region players can handle it.

If you're going to Richer Sounds, the staff there should know about this.

I saw a 444 (slim, silver thing) in Dixons for £199. It's just a really solid, slim, working DVD player. Not, like, fancy recorder thingy.
