In the Observer magazine today, there is a competition for an under 3,000 word short story on any topic, with the winner being included in a forthcoming Picador compilation.

Alas for me, the top age limit is 30. But I'm sure a few peeps on here might be interested...

Just been on the Observer website and there's no mention of the competition there. I do remember that they wouldn't accept e-mail entries, so you might have to track down a copy of the magazine from yesterday. I'll try to put the full details on when I get home from work.
