It's been a loooooong time since i last posted here...and this seems to be a dead thread, so it's not the best place to do it.
Well, anyway, let's get to the point. Being a huge fan of the Stone Roses I had really high expectations for this album. And, well, I can't say those expectations were met.
First of all, John Squire sings REALLY bad. There are some songs where I can't even stand hearing his voice; it sounds like he's impersonating Bob Dylan but the outcome is far worse than the real deal.
There's also the frightening lack of hooks this album has. If John Squire used to have one ability at all, that was his ability to come up with really catchy songs, songs that made you start to hum them before you finished listening to them for the first time. Nothing of this is present here, the "She Bangs the Drums" and "Made of Stone" from the past just aren't there anymore; we don't even get a "Driving South". It seems like he has translated his physical aging into his art; his songs used to be fresh, now it's not only that he's older, his art has become old too. All those terribly dated folk songs, it sounds like something the Black Crowes or Tom Petty came up with on a bad day. The fact that a man as talented as John Squire's behind them only makes things worse.
Deep in my heart I already knew that music wasn't centered in Squire anymore, I knew that it hadn't been like that for a long time. But my love for the Roses made me want to believe that he could do it again...And then he had to come out with this crappy record and throw away all my hopes. Fuck, I'm gonna hate this album soooo much
