I forced myself to read all of it, considering I spent a whole nine cents on it (damn it!!!). It was pretty fucking dire. If that issue was supposed to be the one to entice new readers, I cringe at the thought of what the series proper will entail. I haven't read much Waid stuff, but I've heard so many accolades about him. Is he really always this bad?

I didn't think it was awful, but after I heard that Grant was to do Ultimate FF... I'll wait for that.

Waids stuff has (to Me) been going down hill since the Acliamed Kingdom Come series...

He starts off with some initial good ideas but they quickly geek out & loose any sence of impact... So many of his stories hinge on some obscure geekish detail, but fall apart beyond it...

But hey that's just me...

"And issue 352 stands alone as a pinnacle not just of the series, but the art form." - From the Time article linked in the first post.

Now that's a bold statement. Especially since it seems he's been exposed to the superior efforts of Stan and Jack on the same title. I'll agree that the Simonson issues are pretty nifty-o, though. Try his Thor run. Especially the Tale of the Last Viking.

So far as Waid goes, I'll admit that he's written some of my favourite super-hero titles of the last ten years. In Impulse and certain issues of Captain America he let the artist take the reins and tell the story.
