Alas, all I've done is be bored at work and chat via email. Too much pot smoking this week has made me very tired and lethargic.

ok, that showed up twice...or I'VE done too much pot

Actually ts been about 3 years since I've last done any pot... too much staying up late working on my various project have left me tired and lethargic, not to mention irratable, emotional, violent and ocasionally seeing things. I need a day job...actually I just need a job.

is the board acting strange?

Hopefully the double post will vanish when the moderators get in.

The board has been acting a bit strange though. I've been getting all these errors returning from posts.

Me too but only on this thread and more to the point this page of this thread.

Side note, can you recommend a good wesite for learning illustrator? I sort of gave up on it when all my paths started to join together.

N E way, Im of to sleep.

Unfortunately, I'm largely self-taught. But if you got any questions I'm more than happy to help you play fill in the blanks. Email or PM.

Goodnight Keggaz. Me go home soon. Many yummy comics, new Promethea yay!!!

Strange thing to comment on...I mean, does anybody else here hold strong views on the quality of security in your local Old Navy? Except possibly shoplifters. And shoplifting clothes in America seems singularly pointless...

He was a thief. Back in the day, we would steal DVDs and hock 'em for cash. We were pretty shady sometimes.

Retail will make a soulless husk out of anyone.

You just gave me a flashback from last week's paperback.

That book will chill you to the bone and leave you screaming for more.
Bentley Little, you're right about everything.

Right. I'm in for a bit. Just got in from pub. Pished. Have tea. Very tired. Quite happy, though quite stressed etc. But hey! I got whiskey!

Nearly finished the Shift of Doom. One more evening. I actually feel like I'm going insane at work: just reading, feeling the vast gulf between me and the other people who work there. It's an alright job, but not on these hours.

Still kicking around there, Paleface?

Hey pal. How's tricks? I am in sleepy energyless mode. And my PDA works! My good news for the day was that getting a power adaptor was a lot easier than expected, due to the lovely bloke in Maplins. And it fucking rocks, too: it even has MSN messenger on it!

The Return Of Rothkoid

Ack. Energyless and sleepy - I know how that is. Me, I'm doing OK. Am kinda dolled up because tongiht is a friend's birthday, and a group of us are meant to go to - wait for it - the trots. Slightly more edifying than the dog races, but just substitute short men for long dogs. Ah, joy. Still, seafood buffet and free booze (well, after the $30 is handed over...) - not the worst thing in the world. Getting home past the trackwork will be, however. Grrr.

What I am unhappy about, though, is that I seem to have left my CD wallet at home. Which means I'm devoid of listening stuff. Except for a Lupine Howl CD that's been sitting in my desk for a while because I got it for about $10 (or half one of your fine english pounds, probably) and it's not that good. I think purchasing may be indulged in this lunchtime.

(Oh, exp: check out Tzadik and lemme know what interests you. I have some; but could use pointers on the New Japan stuff...)

Paleface: keep on boozin', son.

I've been getting a lot of Tzadik synchronicities recently. I have to check some of this stuff out, and I'd be up for hearing any and all of it, if you can spare the discs. Remember: I'm insatiable.

Of the Japanese stuff, I'd particularly like to hear Yasunao Tone's Solo for Wounded CD, which is made up entirely of a skipping CD, from what I hear. Anything from Melt Banana can't fail to be awesome - they're just fantastic. I've never heard any Merzbow, but they're also on my must hear list. Ground Zero are excellent, too.

I may well be starting to compose some stuff myself. I desperately want to make some of my own music, and forming a band isn't looking like it'll happen any time soon. I figure I'm bound to get some fun stuff out of three mini-disc players, an old school bass-heavy tape deck, some found sounds, multi-fx and percussives. If it's any good I'll send you some (there are very few people in Southampton qualified to judge that kind of thing, anyway).

Oooooh. That I like the sound of.

I'm kinda tempted to get into electro myself; there's a burgeoning scene here, and to a certain extent, it's money for old rope...

I actually started planning a piece in work today (there was enough dead space between calls). I just need to find a way to imbue some of the ideas with a bit more content and meaning beyond sounding nice, without resorting to the cop-out sampled speaky bits. Not that I'm dissing Godspeed...! you understand - I just don't want to have to resort to such obvious tricks as conventional language to deliver a statement in music. And I find it very hard to make anything unless it's content-filled.

The Return Of Rothkoid
00:17 / 20.09.02
Hmm. Tease out content-filled? Are you referring to music that's imbued with some kind of content in and of itself (as you could argue some church music is) or somrthing else?

And yes, spoken-words can be a big cop-out.

Seth
00:22 / 20.09.02
I'll be blunt. I'm a megalomaniac. I'm attracted to works made by other megalomaniacs. If I'm going to compose my own music, it has to have some kind of meaning to it that's larger than something that can be written down simply and in one sentence. That's not to say that I don't want it to be soulful and appeal on a visceral level: I want everything. I just don't want to resort to obvious signifiers to convey meaning in an instrumental piece. I don't want to be manipulative or obvious. I guess it's all part of learning a new vocabulary.

I'm not saying that all music has to be this way. Maybe I'm just approaching things wrong. Maybe I'm just feckin' tired and ranting.

The Return Of Rothkoid

Dear christ, that sounded bad. What I mean is that things like the tunes played during Dervish devotational rites, say, sounds like there's more to it; like there's preloaded associations... is that what you meant?

Hello all ...by the way, Kegboy, I have the same problem with my paths in Illustrator. I'm following Fool's advice & mainly building with shapes; but if I want to do anything that feels like drawing (free-flowing lines), I go into Photoshop. Which I don't think is ideal, because all my strokes look lumpy. I'm taking a Flash class now, so I might switch to that for drawing-- it's vector-based, but it sort of seems more malleable than Illustrator.

So... what the hell is in Red Bull? Tuesday night I was a total zombie, but this night and last night I drank Red Bull & I'm wide-awake. It doesn't feel like caffeine... is it caffeine?

I used to have the entire list of ingredients, I was going to write a superneato article on energy drinks for the zine, but then my computer died (this was all close to a year ago). But will someone back me up and agree that Red Bull tastes like pink chewable childrens' tylenol?

Saint Keggers

I dont know but according to their commecials it gives you wings. What the hell am I going to do with wings? Its not like they held me up when I jumped off the roof. Oh No....

Yeah Illustrator is a real bastard to learn. I havent used it since classes in college.Usually I just scan in my drawings and then use paths in Photoshop.
But for now its photos, photos, photos.

Paths in Photoshop? I really do have to figure out that #@$% pen tool.... ah well, as long as I have the strength of 10,000 men and the house to myself, I guess I'd better go accomplish something.

There is the autotrace tool in illustrator that turns scans/bitmaps into paths. The pen tool used with 'snap to grid' turned on is good for controling paths. There is a pencil tool for more free flowing stuff. Just remember to go back to the select tool once you've finished an object.

The key to illustrator, I think, is to remember its all line and shape, fill and outline.
