NewsFlash: Terrorism Works!

Saudi Arabia is considering ending US military presence in their country.

Thoughts?

I am torn about this one, actually. On the one hand, if the Saudis do ask the US to leave, this could strain US support for the Saudi Regime, which doesn't deserve to be supported. On the other hand, this may embolden the malcontents in Iraq to do something stupid. And it would give mr. bin Laden his victory.

Would US out of SA stop terrorism against the US?

So what happens if Saudi A. ask US to withdraw troops and US says 'no'?

I'm not sure this would actually happen--at the worst the US will simply take enough time to withdraw that they can accomplish whatever they might want to be in Saudi to do (i.e. invade Iraq), but an outright refusal could mean the US was a hostile force occupying the country and lead to all sorts of unpleasantness.

Given how widely the current Saudi regime is despised within the country, a US departure would probably precipitate either a quick change of government, a bloody dictatorial crackdown, or an anarchic revolution. As with most Islamic states, the only alternative to the corupt regime at present is Islamic extremism--to wit, if the Saudi royal family *is* overthrown, I imagine the US will be back in there quite quickly.

Twenty-five. Why do you ask?

On topic, I sincerely doubt that a US withdrawal from Saudi Arabia would end terrorism against the US, given that the US continues to support Israel in their conflict with the Palestinians. In all probability, there is *no* degree of capitulation on the US's part which would end terrorism against it, short of total collapse.

It bothers me to no end that this logjam exists, that there seems to be no available permanent solution other than for one side to kill as many people on the other side as it can. I'd like nothing better than to see an effective method of international arbitration prevail over the tried and true practice of warfare, but it would be something of a catch-22 to put it into operation--no one would use it unless they thought they could trust the results, and without anyone using it, there would be no results to trust. It's a dark irony indeed that individuals within civilized nations settle their disputes more or less reasonably in courts of law while the nations themselves persist in going at it like the Hatfields and the McCoys.

Which is only vaguely related to this thread, I suppose, but if you listen to enough NPR and attend enough lectures on international law, this sort of thing gets into your head and refuses to leave.
