from Lyra in the Audio Galaxy thread:
"But seriously, shouldn't the mp3-trading community all be getting behind Gnutella or Freenet in a concerted effort? Because they are properly P2P and un-shutdownable it makes much more sense than pissing around on soulseek and suchlike."
So, where do YOU think P2P should go?
Personally, I'm with Lyra for general, all in one systems. People need to be focusing on user friendly, reliable software based on the gnutella system. Unfortunatly, it hampers profit magins. You could make it shareware, but let's face it, this isn't the kind of community you'll count on for registering their software.
That said, I'd also like to see more work done with specialized systems. Example, the Furthur Network. This way you can specialize the interface (the furthur client allows for search on set list, source, venue, band, format, and a whole bunch of other stuff) as well as getting better speeds, because there aren't a couple million people trying to download porn. On Furthur, a double digit download speed is slow, and triple digit aren't uncommon. I'd love to see a network set up for anime fansubs.
Not to mention specialized systems are easier to make "legal" or at least easier to make the RIAA's and MPAA's lawsuits to much trouble.
So where do you see the future of p2p? |
