Barbeinterview (week 2)

Seth
19:35 / 08.09.02
Same as last week (the rules have been reprinted in the abstract). Choose your Barbeloid for interview, and post the questions you'd like answered.

Oh, and try to include a few more intelligent questions this time

Tom's questions from last week have now been PM'd. Watch this space...

I nominate Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen is my god because he is a mystery, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks so!

I need more time to think of a question, though....

I'd like to nominate Laurence Llewlyn-Bowen Is My God, because he is a total enigma to me, and I would love to know where he's coming from.

Some questions for Laurence:

* Where are you from? Can you tell us any biographical information about yourself, or at least could you tell us what you think we should all know about your non-fictionsuit self?

* What do you think you have gained from being a regular poster on Barbelith?

Matthew Fluxington
22:09 / 08.09.02
c'mon, everyone - the simple fact that two separate posters nominated him AND declared him a man of mystery AT THE SAME EXACT TIME should be enough to make Laurence our next candidate!

02:42 / 09.09.02
Have you guys been reading my blog or is this just a weird coincidence?

No, I'm not stalking Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Mazarine
02:49 / 09.09.02
Actually, I nominate Flyboy. And if he gets picked, I'd like to ask him what was his favorite thing about his childhood, or if he'd rather not answer that, what was his favorite thing about someone else's childhood. For no reason other than I'm curious.

Matthew Fluxington
03:21 / 09.09.02
Flyboy would be fun, I'd be into that, but knowing Flyboy fairly well and not knowing anything even the first thing about Laurence, I implore you all to pursue Mr. Llewelyn-Bowen Is My God as our next interview subject....he's kinda like that strange guy who lives down the street who you always wonder about but yr just too shy to actually just chat with. In a nice way, really.

I nominate Lurid Archive, because he's always great to read. And I'll spend the next couple of days dreaming up a few difficult questions...

Jack The Bodiless

I also nominate Lurid... questions, questions... I'll be right back.

Q: Why the name Laurence Llewlyn-Bowen?

So a couple of you want to interrogate me but can't think of anything to ask? I'm sure that I should be able to extract loads of meaning from that if I thought about it hard enough. (OK, I already did, but it wasn't that interesting.)

So whoever goes next, I'd be quite interested in finding about about their politics, worldview, philosophy and so forth. Some of this is obvious from a person's posts, but not always as comprehensively as you might like. I just think that it is interesting to find out where a person is coming from.

This might sound surprising, but I think that Haus would be interesting in this regard. The raised eyebrows and smart, cutting quip aside, he is surprisingly circumspect in expressing views, choosing often to counter rather than assert. But perhaps trying to do it at a Barbemeet, when the beer is flowing freely would be more natural. Though, of course, I wouldn't be meeting Haus then.

Oh yes, I'm interested in finding out about you, Lurid, and about Haus and about numerous other personalities, but I find that I agree with you more often than I disagree. I want to know more about this person who I'm almost always disagreeing with! This person I have such a hard time understanding.

So, for Laurence, yes! This! As Lurid says: So whoever goes next, I'd be quite interested in finding about about their politics, worldview, philosophy and so forth.

I'd like to up the nominations for Laurence by one, me.

As per topic abstract - "If my nomination gets picked I'd like to ask..." In light of previous 'nerd porn' comments in the Comics forum a ways back - What are the two most personally affecting comic book stories you've encountered in your time? What made/makes them resonate with you and what about them, if anything, do you think is relevant to the greater human experience? [/melodrama]

Since it looks to be LL-BIMG by a landslide, I'd like to ask a two part question: What traits do you share in common with your namesake, and would you consider yourself to be scary?

Look at the self-effacing, humble wee man. Did it ever occur to you that we might be intending to scour the board for your posts in order to ask the most penetrating questions? That we're genuinelty interested in what you have to say, but want to ask stuff that'll make you do a little bit of work to answer?

Nah. That's why we love you, dude. We just want to prod you with surgical implements at the same time. You've never had it so good

exp. I am really looking at you in a new and exciting way. But Buddhas don't.... There is nowhere to go with that thought that I won't regret in the morning.

But actually, I am starting to get really interested in other people's interest in laurence. I actually find that I agree with his sentiments pretty often. He presents his case badly and inflexibly more often than not, but he often has valid things to say. I think that there is a something telling about the Barbelith respected modes of communication. Either that, or laurence is bad at arguing.

Questions, questions, Laurence. Why do you think people are displaying such strong reactions to you? How old are you? Given your undeniably oppositional stance, what do you get most worked up about when reading Barbelith? I think you feel misunderstood here. Do you agree? If you do, what do you think is the cause of this?

More personally. Do you feel especially concerned with issues of sex and gender? Why? What assumptions on the board would you like to challenge?

Are you going to agree to this interrogation? hehehe.

Here's two more semi-generic-but-still-interesting-to-me questions :

What brought you to Barbelith?

What was your first post, and was it significant to you? If so, why?

How do you look at yourself as interacting w/ Barbelith? Do you tend to think of yourself interfacing with individual humans in the Barbelith-scope, or is it more of a plugging-in to a large prismatic entity, a single thing with a vast array of aspects, ficsuit facets and personlaities? (personally, I'm curious what anyone thinks on this...)

"I actually find that I agree with (Laurence's) sentiments pretty often. He presents his case badly and inflexibly more often than not, but he often has valid things to say. I think that there is a something telling about the Barbelith respected modes of communication."

Spot on, Lurid. I'm generally baffled whenever there's a huge backlash against Laurence (and it seems to happen quite often, for some reason), as he usually argues his side w/intelligence and good grace, and I've very rarely seen him make personal attacks of any sort (like those sometimes made against him...). I don't always agree w/what he has to say, and he often loses focus, and even sometimes sort of switches sides in the middle of an argument...but that's nothing that hasn't held true for any other 'Lither at one time or another. Mostly, he thinks things through and takes time out for a reasoned (and often long) response.

I have to say that, while I think that Laurence would make a good interview subject and that this interview thingy is a good idea, this is most definitely an instance where the old Barb-ability to search for the posts of a given user would come in most handy. Any chance of having this reinstated any time in the near future, Tom?

Yup. He poses some interesting questions. And even though they don't make me change my mind, they sure seem to encourage debate.

Has Laurence agreed to do the interview? It'd be a shame if all these questions went to waste.

In case he is unaware of our evil plot, I have just sent him a PM to make sure he knows.

The always-delightful Apple Picker has just pointed me in this direction.

I nominate Haus.

I nominate myself.

My question is, why don't you get you rinsurance straightened out and go to the dentist, you loser?

Does that mean you do not wish to be interviewed yourself, LLB?

I hope that's not what it means.

I don't mind being interviewed. But I wouldn't pick myself, you know?

I's be happy to be interviewee the third, but it looks like it;s all Laurence right now...

I think Haus would be a great third interview, though I don't have any questions for him just yet.

Rev. Orr
07:51 / 12.09.02
Question for Haus: what is it with you and the Amish?

Seth
21:29 / 15.09.02
LLB has been PMd with his questions.

Is anyone actually interested in doing this for a third week? I bet it'll either be Ganesh, Haus or Lurid if we do. Anyone up for it?

I'm down for a third week, and I'd like it to be Haus. My question: Indulge my gullible self- do you actually have Mad hax0r skillz, or was that in jest?
