A A Gill's article in GQ this month is bitter, angry, cynical, unpleasant, vituperative, splenetic, vitriolic, and immensely satisfying reading.

This is how news gets distorted - if only the conspiracy were intelligent, we might have a chance. But Gill makes clear that it's a low-end conspiracy of idiots.

Oh, it's about coverage of the Afghanistan/Pakistan border area. There's a slightly edited version in the Independent Review, I think.

I read the Independent version. Nothing startlingly new, but it's a very good bit of writing. A lot of earlier metacoverage (journalism about journalists) simply noted the backhander culture that had sprung up around them- it's refreshing to read a writer that sees the implications and gives a shit. His anger is very understandable...

The Independent is pretty much the only broadsheet I have paid attention to over the whole Afghanistan thing- seems to be the only one that doesn't have some kind of editorially-enforced PoV on the situation.
