Bush:"Espouse a Philosophy, go to Jail"

Ethan Hawke
16:26 / 07.01.02
Buried in a New York Times Article :

quote:Mr. Bush also used the Portland speech to suggest for the first time that voicing a terrorist creed would be viewed by his administration in the same terms as committing an act of terrorism. He told the crowd that anyone "who espouses a philosophy that's terrorist and bent, I assure you we will bring that person to justice." His aides did not elaborate.

Bush running his mouth or a harbinger of things to come. I suspect the former, as he has a tendency to say things off the cuff that aren't necessarily in line with what his handlers are actually doing.

Hey Todd -- thanks for posting this. I'm not full of pertinent comments, but it's good to be aware of what words are coming out of our proudest pundit.

"terrorist and bent", eh?

Well I'm not sure exactly what he means by that, BUT FUCK THIS COMPLETELY, THOROUGHLY AND UTTERLY.

I so hope he's just babbling rather than actually planning legislation of some kind..

Political dissent can bring federal agent to door

quote: By Kris Axtman | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
HOUSTON - It was 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 7 when the two men showed up.

Donna Huanca was alone, getting ready to open Houston's Art Car Museum. "They looked like robots," she says.

Is the FBI acting properly in investigating reports of "anti-american activity?"

She told the men, dressed in dark suits and carrying leather portfolios, that they would have to wait until the doors opened at 11. That was when they flipped out their badges: They were federal agents investigating reports of "anti-American activity" at the tiny art gallery.

Florida witch hunt

quote:By Bruce Shapiro

Jan. 8, 2002 | When Sami Al-Arian, a computer science professor at the University of South Florida and a local Muslim community leader, agreed to go on Fox News' popular "O'Reilly Factor" Sept. 28, he thought he'd be discussing American Muslims' reaction to Sept. 11. Instead he found himself denounced by host Bill O'Reilly as a "terrorist" for his work supporting Palestinian statehood, with O'Reilly quoting incendiary anti-Israel remarks Al-Arian made 15 years ago.

"Pakis", "terrorist and bent"...

Couldn't you Yanks bring back the Alzheimery cowboy one who had a thing for chimps and hated those polluting bastard trees? In retrospect, he seems harmless and cuddly...

Given that the "Yanks" didn't really elect the guy they have now, getting rid of him doesn't seem an option either. Oddly enough, I miss Reagan too. Who knew an alzheimer-ridden cold-war hollywood-cowboy could seem so harmless?

What's happened to that tradition that says presidents elected in a year ending with 0 get assassinated, anyway?

Has it deserted the world in it's hour of need?

Hey, with rapid developments in the Enron scandal happening, maybe, just maybe, it'll taint his presidency enough to make him incapable of doing real harm. Already John Ashcroft has recused himself from the Enron invsestigation as he received money from them in the 2000 campaign, and details of phone calls from Enron to Adminstration officials are emerging.

alas for us, not only was he not really elected, he also was not selected until '01. But maybe the 0-luvin' assassination karmic forces won't let him out on those technicalities...

I'd wait until I figured out what he means before getting upset about it. Espousing a philosophy that says KILL AS MANY AMERICANS AS YOU CAN, or DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO BRING AMERICA DOWN sounds to me like supporting terrorism and inciting violence.

Gotta say, I'm with Rizla on this one... and if "inciting violence" in the abstract meakes you a terrorist, then surely most of Bush's war cabinet could get sent down?
But hey. He probably thought he was discussing (or "discussorising", as he'd probably say if it was a sketch on "Dead Ringers") cheese or something.
"Terrorist and bent".
Christ, with his connections, you'd think he could afford some decent speechwriters.

The Enron thing is perfectly capable of losing Bush the next election... he has to keep the money sweet because of the way the US political system works but given that his share of the popular vote was so slim and that so many Enron employees have lost their savings+pensions due to share devaluation, this is a bit of a litmus test.

I live in hope, anyway.

unfortunately, by the time of re-election nobody will remember the enron business. except for mudslingers who will try to remind people and will fail. miserably.

besides, looking at the way things are going over there democracy-wize, i doubt there will be an election. ever.

fluid_state

exactly. the next election will be decided on the "who do you want defending your now-precarious presonal safety" question. the Enron thing (and any similar corporate hocus-pocus) will seem too complex and impossibly arcane to really affect the hearts and minds of the U.S. voters. I wouldn't be surprised if there's another attack a year to a month before the next election, just to underscore the point.

Who would have thought, after the fracas surrounding the 2000 election, that it was just a warm-up? Given that Bush's approval rating went from somewhere around 40% to 93% after 9/11, you'll have to imagine he'll keep the "war on terrorism" going until the next election in hopes of keeping himself in office.

On the flip side, however, given that the Enron scandal is the best shot anyone has had so far of dethroning Bush (so to speak), I imagine it'll be pursued to its furthest extent which, given the enormous amount of campaign money Enron threw around, would probably not have happened in any other circumstances.

So, on one hand a powerful corporation is actually held accountable for its wrongdoings. On the other, the US keeps bombing third-world countries. And, of course, some people within its borders are scrutinized by the FBI for having opinions, while others are arrested for having "terrorist philosophies," whatever those may be. For all the evidence, that could be code for "Noam Chomsky."

I feel all warm, fuzzy and secure. Does anyone out there have any good news? Please?

Reports of popular street-corner meetings on direct democracy in Argentina?

Probably not all that helpful in the great midwestern vortex, but good news is good news.

I think the point is that Shrub is not saying those things specifically, but just that espousing any philosophy which promotes a violent response to the US is a terrorist one. So if you are a Colombian FARC member, you could be a terrorist just by fighting against the US-backed military. By that way of thinking, the US Revolution would have been a terorrist activity against the British empire. Like they say, one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter.
