Magick, Cut-Ups, & Collages

Was flipping through some old books and papers in my room the other day and ran across a Burroughs quote about how cut-ups let the future "leak through" into the present; and found an article I printed out ages ago about synchronistic experiences others have had with making collages (I'd put up the URL but it no longer works). In any event, I w anted to know if anyone has had successfull predictive experiences with cut-up or collage, and if it could be (or has been) adapted to magickal practice. I am not a practioner, though I am extremely interested in the effects (magickal and otherwise) of cut-up and collage and its application to other, related areas (audio/video tape, multimedia, etc.) Also, is it possible to use this analagous to sigilization? Just wondering.

In a rush, can't do the link, but if you do a Burroughs search on Phil Hine's website, he and Dave Lee have written stuff on their predictive power. I did a talk on it not so long ago and found that those two seem to be key as far as cut-up + magick goes.

I remember in a book by Lynn Andrews, the second of the Shaman Woman series, where a black sorceress uses cutting pieces of paper for quite evilish deeds. She was the lover of the villain in the novel, Red Dog. The whole episode with this character was quite creepy.

Nutella 23: I just experienced something very much like what you are asking about, but not exactly. The cut-up did not necessarily predict the future, more so, I am now convinced, it actually created the future. Here is what happened...

I was moved to create a collage (a form I frequently utilize for my sigils) comprised of images of people, body parts, and situations that I find sexy. Basically a cut-up of what turns me on in order to explore (and heal) those aspects of myself. The images used were pictures I've collected out of magazines, porno's and other random sources. I had spent a few hours scanning and assembling my collage in Photoshop. The larger images were of particular people whom I found rather beautiful and erotic. The whole idea of the collage was to symbolize that which brings out lust in me for the opposite sex. So I'd been at it half the night, really engrossed in the creation of the collage, when for no apparent reason, the computer crashed (something which usually never happens)... as I had not previously saved the unfinished collage, all was lost with no way to be recovered. I was bummed out at my own negligence for not saving, considered starting over, than after realizing how many hours I had been at it and that the sun was soon to come up, I said "Fuck It" and went to bed, hot and bothered.

The next day I was at the grocery store, not paying attention to anything other than what type of bread I was going to buy. From out of nowhere a voice appeared, complimenting me on an item of jewelry that I was wearing. When I turned to face that voice, I was awe struck by the most beautiful and sexiest creature I had ever seen. The most perfect specimen of all that I find attractive in another was now standing here in front of me, smiling and chatting me up! I almost could not speak, the shock of just how hot this person was sort of stupefied me and turned me into jello at the same time. We shared a few words and smiles and then went about our separate ways shopping. A few more smiles exchanged as we ran into each other at various points in the store... then to the checkout where I now notice this sublime creature is leaving with who was quite obviously their significant (and rather boring looking) other. Bah... so much for miracles.

Anyhow, it wasn't until later that night when I was thinking about how amazing this person was, that it suddenly hit me. The person whom I had encountered was an amalgamation of all the different images I had used in the collage. Literally. Right down to the particulars, such as hair cut, body type, clothing style, tattoos, etc. It was uncanny... as if I had taken all those images, thrown them into a melting pot and created a new being out of them... that is who I meet in the store. I seriously don't think that person ever existed before I made the collage.

A few interesting points. The computer crashed and the collage was lost. Talk about banishing and forgetting! This was of course entirely unintentional and pissed me off at the time but was otherwise completely effective, despite myself.

Important to note too the significant other, who I obviously didn't include into the collage. What's that all about? Where is the happy lust-filled ending I would have preferred? Goes to show my theory and revelation here is in no way foolproof. Still, an amazing example to me of what my mind is capable of when I apply it to something, even if the results are not exactly what I had intended. Also goes to show that there is always a possibility for a wild card unless you cover all your bases. So to answer your question, I feel that it is absolutely possible to use all types of cut-up methods for sigil magick... whether it be for predicting the future, or creating it "in one's own image".

Many new idea's for me to obsess on now...

Can you please let me know where this quote came from?

Much appreciated- Anathema

I'm pondering (for awhile now) how to apply some of WSB's theories (and the above is only the tip of the iceberg) to blogging ...

Give me a moment and I'll see if I can Google up some cut-up articles.

Also, I saw this recommended in a pretty unmagicky career advice book. The exercise was that you go wild just cutting out pictures that you like, and then you stick them together in a collage... and then you analyze the resulting collage ...et voila, there will be the thing that you really would be happy doing for a living.

um.... yes.... thing I would like doing for a living.

what happens if all your pictures are from trashy womans publications?

that sounds a little too "without intent" for me. Wouldn't you need to define what you were hoping to find BEFORE cutting and making the collage?

This book was directed at people who had gotten themselves into careers that they thought they *should* ...so I think this was really an "anti-should" exercise. I didn't try it myself actually. But if you were reading this particular book and going through the exercises, I think the intent to "find a job I really like" would already be in your head? Well anyway, like I said, there wasn't a whiff about magick in the book... all dressed up like sensible psychology.

I consider some collages to work like effective abstracts or talismans. I suppose you could do the Tristan Tsara method (picking blindly) or juxtapose things that you feel may have significance. I have also used collages as pantacles and also as objects for magickal charging, and as symbols of certain godforms for invocations.

mental cut ups.

cutting up consciousness is another way to achieve effects.
it requires you having more than one narrative in your mind ie developing multiple voices, streams of thought, visualisations sounds and images and any other senses you can sucessfully cut in.

to begin with you will have to become aware of the whole of your experience ie internal and external experienced holistically the mergeing of object and subject. then you will need to examine each definaite part that makes that experience, ie senosry components and internal narrative

it is then a case of either breaking these down into smaller component identities or mulitplying them, roleplaying alternatives to your own current perceptions can start this process to begin with and maintaining those perceptions alongside your own as many as you can manage
each should have its own discenable identity.

much like viewing a soap opera and being each character in it then internalising them as personas, independent of the central self that remains as awareness, soap operas are illustartive not to be recommended.

once this has been practiced for some time until each becomes a distinct personality within you as an individual, a moment of convergence can then occur, with various senosry data and internal narratives mixing into a new construct a cut up identity modelled on imagination of various selves, creating a new distinct self.

another way to relate to this would be to consider a group you belong too and how you may pick up various traits from differeing members yet retain you own sense of self awareness, this internal process could also be performed with the cutting and remixing of archetypes rather than personas.

the creation of internal identities also lends itself well too multitasking contemplating from a variety of angles similtaneously etc etc.

I just did a spot of magick involving email cutup. Basically, I took a whole tonne of saved emails from a particular person (the very same I was working the magick for), cut and pasted the text into Word, and then rearrnged the out of context quotes to form a lengthy, poetic statement relating to the intent of the 'working. I then read and reread it aloud, until it reduced to chant.

The basic rule I used was that no text could be added, but it could be fully rearranged, while trying to keep enough phrases intact that I could still hear the other person's tone behind the affirmations.

I'll post when I have data on results.

Being the proud owner of a new digital dictaphone (that sadly does not ahve editing facilities)

I am most interested in Burroughs and Gysin's Magickal use of Tape recorders. I have heard how Burroughs and Gysin would exact revenge via splicing 'distress' sounds over the ambient noise in an establishment where they had received poor service. This had the alleged affect of getting the establishment closed and the lease not being taken up for months on the same site

Has anybody used this technique in their own magicakal endeavours

If you can get hold of it (I got a copy from a moron on ebay for £5) 'The Third Mind' by Gysin and Burroughs explores the cut up and how to do it / where it came from etc.

Very cool threads, thanks to all who've contributed - I just did my first collage piece of art in a LOOONG time (i.e. since like maybe 3rd grade) and although it didn't have any conscious magickal agenda as far as I can tell, it was loads of fun and this thread has inspired me to try one with a magickal intent.

You know, I forgot that I did collage in recent years - namely, my pictoral representation of the Lith servitor GEK, which was done about 3 years ago (I printed out pages of text from the Barbelith board and used various text from Lith posts to make up his lizard body). And that was certainly magickal in intent and function... I did at an office temp job in a feverishly inspired state, sneakily doing it at my desk without any of the lawyers noticing.

cut ups to me seem illustartive of the sensory perceptions and change of awareness and how they are relayed to consciousness also of the way consciousness jump from one perception to another from one thought to the next.
the externalisation of cut ups ie in writing and collage seems to make this internal cutting process more apparent,
ie it acts as a tool to increase awareness of ones own functioning of the dialogue between consciousness and senses, in the shifting pattern of awareness, it also illustrates the lack of concentration in day to day living. the subconscious habitual perceptions that are used to survive and never made conscious (rarely). to control the internal cut, the internal beat or to be free of internal control, opening and closing windows and doors, digging new tunnels, cutting the train of thought back scratching back and forth, sampling a memory from yesterday, rewinding the stream of consciousness as it flows pauseing for that second to become aware and then to begin playing again.
