Meeting Characters in The Oh So Loose Beyond: A Survey

I have always been very interested and amused by the range of "culturally" and "consensually" known characters the "journeyer" (for lack of a better term) can meet, or indeed reports to have met, while experiencing an "altered states of consciousness" (also for lack of a decidedly better term), be it regular dreaming or lucid dreaming, OBEs, NDEs, meditation, visitations, magickal invocation, rituals, hallucinogenic trips, drumming trances... In short: while navigating outside the common, secure, sometimes dull, always on the verge of dissolution, not always nice to be back, ol' planet Earth's, linear, despotic, and irreversible SpAceTimE.

So, I would like this to be sort of a simple, curious and frivolous survey, where we can all enter or mention the generally known characters we have encountered at the other side of "the crack between the worlds", be them public figures, actors, politics (yeeech!), scientists, and historic, fictional, mythic, fantasy, religious, legendary, archetypical, or literary characters. All of them others reading this can relate to, either if you've met them through a consistent and repetitive pattern of experiences, or just in a single encounter of a varying degree of "meaningfullness", but mainly when the "journeyer" had no subjective doubt that the character met was THE character met, without going into the by now forgettable discussion about whether it was "a projection from the journeyer" or not.

A hint or reference about the nature of the altered state may also be useful, along with a two word description if necessary for the sake of specificty. Whether a pattern will surface or not we'll have to wait and see. I'll start with my own list, which I expect will expand as memories start comming up, and we hopefully get to have some inter-introspective amusement. I have attempted a loose chronological order.

- Cat Woman, in full black shiny cat-suit if you are curious, from the 70s Batman TV serials starring Adam West. Met in different dreams (DRs)

- Darth Vader, from the film Star Wars (duh...). Nightmare (NM). (Thanks GL for this one)

- Chewbacca, also from Stars Wars. same NM

- Vladimir Nabokov, russian novelist. Met in dream (DR).

- Alec Guinnes, actor. DR

- Sabretooth, Marvel comic book character. DR

- The Incredible Hulk, Marvel comic book character. DR

- Ian McKellen's Magnetto, from the film X-Men, English actor impersonating a Marvel comic book character. Met in waking self hypnosis (WSH).

- Don Juan Matus, from the Carlos Castaneda's books. Met in lucid dreams (LDs) and dreams (DRs).

- Carlos Castaneda. DRs

- Giant Caribbean Turtle, from "The Boy Who Talked With Animals", a short story by Roald Dahl. LD

- Godzilla, monster from the last movie. LD

- THE archetypical GraY AlieN. DRs

- King Mob. DRs

All in dreams:

Practically the entire main casts of Star Trek, Buffy and Angel (all TV series, ya dolt). Thankfully, my Star Trek characters are mainly drawn from Deep Space Nine, with a smattering of Next Gen - none from Voyager. I'm hoping for a few from Enterprise if it continues to get better, especially Hoshi: yowza!

The Queen of England.

Jesus. Not the one from the Big Lebowski.

Jeff Goldblum. Actor, starred in the Fly, The Tall Guy, and Independence Day.

Wolverine. Longstanding character from the X-Men. Gay icon.

Scott Anderson from Hollyoaks (British soap opera). Footballer on rape charges. Kinda ashamed of this one.

Mark Fowler, Steve Owen and Phil Mitchell from Eastenders (British soap opera).

Annabel Chong. Broke the gang bang record by shagging 251 consecutive blokes, had an alright but clumsy documentary made about it. She's kinda become one of my heros, and regularly turns up in my dreams personifying my anima.

Patrick McGoohan's character from Dangerman (sixties TV show. There's an interesting debate to be had concerning whether this character is the same as the one he played in The Prisoner. I'd say not...)

Lift to Experience. Rather good Christian rock'n'noise band from Texas. Made a double concept album about Texas being the New Jerusalem.

Marillion. Punk band.

Off the top of my head. There may be more.

my weirdest dream lucid dream ever...i knew i was dreaming, so i was jumping across the rooftops of large budings in acity, when i sensed something foreign, something animal like and predatory... then i noticed in the distance, a person, pitch black, like a black hole in my dream, jumpig across buildigs towards me, with great speed. i ot the idea it wasnt from my dream, it hit me, the dream ended, and i was in my bed, but it was still hitting me, i couldnt see it anymore, cos i was awake, but paralysed, so i put up a sheild tht softened the blows, then made hundred of purple rotating spikes shoot out from my sheild and slash it, i didnt kill it, just injured.

weird thing was, when it hit me, it felt as though i was leavig my body, and i had to pull myself back after every hit (while i was awake!!)

This is a cool thread!

Off the top of my head....

Superman in a dream but he was in a really bad way. He had the shit kicked out of him by The Hag (Hecate, Sheila-Na-Gig, Morgan Le Faye, Baba Yaga...whichever!)

The Goddess has come to me in other forms as well. I travelled deep into the Earth and met her. I also had a dream where Her faced changed, continuously, and she gave me a watch...or rather, time. It's face changed too.

In heightened states of awareness I have come into contact with Anubis, usually with some warning.

Err, God once. He spoke to me. He said "Don't close the door!" Whatever that means. That happened during an afternoon nap.

I tend to visit underwater realms and visit the creatures there. I have had conversations with Beluga whales and Dolphins. The sharks all seem to keep away though.

Morpheus....in a dream of course!

The Nagual Julian, who is very similar to Morpheus.

My Teacher, who could enter your dreams at will.

My Lama, who could enter your dreams at will also but, less inclined to do so.

I also have had a lucid dream where I met Green man

That is all I can think of now.

Never had any vision of tv-stars Truly, if I was to encounter something like, let's say, James Bond, in a state of heightened awareness, I'd say I'm getting screwed up - and I'd throw my tv-set away immediately

I used to have regular encounters with the following, especially during mushroom or lsd sessions, and sometimes during dreaming:

- an old indian-like lady who's face I never saw, but she always comforts me.. (she's so nice!)

- some formless entity giving me good intuitive hints on decisions I have to make (I know if I disregard them, afterwards it usually turns out I made a bad choice)

These are the only ones I can really distinguish among all the psychologically-projected things.

You'd think I'd have more celeb type dreams being the celebrity freak that I am - I've had :

Buffy (but I think it was possibly just SMG)
Faith (she was in Faith mode rather than Eliza)
Jesus (one of the most intense dreams I've ever had)
Britney (my favourite anti-christ)

I think I had a Kylie dream too?

Pfff thought I would have had more than that, steps are going to have to be made

I once dreamed that I was dancing with a ballerina, who changed into a Jackal headed creature before my eyes and started cackling

On another occasion, a bearded man stated "This is a test", then informed me that a mate of mine was going to wake me up with a phone call. Bit of an daft one really.

I have had a very strange series of lucid dreams over the past few years. In them I have repeatedly met and spoken to none other than Star Trek Voyager's Captain Janeway. In fact, Janeway has told me that she's my spirit guide. I'm incredibly sceptical about spirit guides and all that stuff, but one aspect of the first experience sticks in my mind. Rather than realising that I was dreaming via some process of introspection (as is usual for lucid dreams) Janeway actually told me I was dreaming, and then it went lucid... She has told me a fair few things about the dreamworld too...

Interesting thread, and one that will be difficult to answer. I've encountered so many different film stars, fictional and non-fictional characters in my dreams alone over the years that it would be hard to list them all.

On a side-note, I will state that I tend to assimulate cultural icons very easily into my unconscious, and they crop up in dreams quite quickly. What's interesting then is figuring out what does my mind associate with this character, and what does it represent to me. Though, sometimes a fictional character can actually be a person who I'm interacting with in Dream Time who has taken on that aspect - or my mind has assigned them that aspect - to indicate his/her role.

Like many of you the entire cast of Buffy appears quite regularly. I've had some Trek dreams, but mainly of them it's the Borg that appear. Some of the cast from the current Lord of the Rings movies have been appearing lately, but Saruman in particular. Aliens from the Aliens movies are moderatley common. Again, recently, some of the cast from Six Feet Under have been appearing. Oh, and the Osbournes have cropped up, as have some of the people from Malcolm in the Middle. Not surprisingly, some of the Invisibles have cropped up, including King Mob and Lord Fanny. I've encountered people who've died, such as Aleister Crowley, for example. I've apparently met some of you not-so-fictional characters from this board too, for what it's worth.

I dream about movie stars quite often - Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jeff Goldblum, Rowan Atkinson, Jack Nickleson, Bruce Willis, David Duchovany, Rutger Hauer, Christopher Lee, Robbie Williams, and Wil Smith are just a sample of them. Interestingly, I see there's an emphasis on male characters, though there are plenty of women in the previous list.

I've also encountered a range of Gods/Entities/Spirits in my dreaming life, which would take me too long to list. The interesting ones are the non-human other-dimension entities. Tends to tire me out though.

In my active shamanic work, once again the list of encountered Spirits/etc. is too long to list. It's quite a varied pantheon of characters.

I also dream about my family and friends a great deal.

I've been harrassed by a triumvirate featuring Alan Moore, John Constantine, and Sting, many times in dreams and during self-hypnosis (SH). They're always upset that I won't let them forget about each other and get on with their lives, though in some of the trances Sting is pretty understanding. Sometimes in SH I'm able to get Alan alone on the porch of a beach house, but he's never very talkative.

Similarly, I've met Robert Graves while visiting Majorca in a dream. I found him by a gnarly olive tree overlooking a steep shale slope, an old man in black with a black bolero hat. He wouldn't -- or couldn't -- talk to me, either, but he presented me with a series of interesting objects: a root naturally shaped into a figure; a steel ring with a blue stone; shotglass with strange water in it; other stuff. He'd hand one to me, I'd look them over, he'd graciously except it back and give me a new one -- went on for some time.

There is a group of elves or goblins or aliens or something who show up as I'm drifting off. They have childlike bodies with mottled skins and, often, masks. At first they're frightening, but I realize it's just a trick and I try to ask them why they want to scare me. Again, not forthcoming.

I've actually been meaning to ask about another guy, and this seems like a good enough place to brooch it. I've met, in several dreams & SH, a disagreeable teenager with malformed eyes -- three, right in a row, ie one where the bridge of his nose should be -- a brilliant cobalt color and faceted. In dreams he is usually dressed in casual teenager-clothes and will appear very suddenly while something else is going on. In SH, he's naked, with fleshy (not feathery) wings on his ankles, calves, thighs, hips, and ribs. I'm finding it hard to explain what he's doing -- checking me out, I guess. He's not entirely friendly. Who is this guy and what does he want from me?

I forgot to mention the Rat Shark, who is, oddly, a kind of cat that burrows in the muddy sand in the shallows and leaps up to eat fish & turtles. Lots of dreams about him, associated with the same kinds of feelings you get watching a nature show about snakes eating -- sort of fascinated, disgusted, frightened all at once. Don't know if this quite matches what you're looking for, though.

The Tower Always Falls

Huh. I almost never have celebrities in my dreams.

I met "The Mantis" once. Apparently it's a very common alien insect sighting among shroomheads.

But as for dreams... well I undewent sleep paralysis on what used to be a VERY regular basis. The last time was maybe a year or so ago, when I finally forced myself to move, within the context of the dream out of my paralysis. As I finally broke out, two alien gray figures walked in through my bedroom door. (I call them alien gray, since their body proportions were just like that, but they were almost pitch black...) Terror overcame me and I shot one of them. The other one turned around and walked back out.

I've never really had sleep paralysis again. and given the context of the "dream", I often wonder if that's a good thing.

Recently I had an entire movie trailer in my head for a non-existent movie starring Steve Martin. It looked pretty fasicnating, and the climax had Steve Martin holding most of the small town hostage in a bank with two guns as a Catatonia cover of "Under Pressure" blared.

And looking through my dream journal I see a dream I had where all the members of the JLA were sort of undergoing therapy in my living room. J'onn wne ton and on about how he can't help immolating himself because he feels he needs to be punished. Maybe i do have celebrity dreams... huh.

Qalyn: For some reason that brings to (my) mind Argus and Hermes. Didn't Hermes kill off the thousand-eyed Argus? Maybe they got it on before our favorite greek god did the deed and resulted in this little tyke.

(possible tangent: didn't Eddie Campbell's "Eyeball Kid" pretty much deal with a surly teenager with a slew of eyes and winged feet?)

Tower, I thought of Hermes, too, and its not unusual for Hermes to be depicted as a 'youth', but there's something toxic about this kid that just doesn't feel like Hermes -- not that I know anything. I hadn't thought of Argus -- or the Eyeball Kid, really.

So... are there any conclusions to draw from this, other than the fact that our dreams make use of our entire experience? Is it worth starting a sister thread on dream locations, or would we just draw the same kind of conclusions?

Well, I intended it to be just as it is, a long list of fellows you could read up here and go, oh, he dreamt with such and such. I really did not expect to find any evident "pattern", such as, look, everybody dreams with King Mob.

I have met Klaus Kinsky dressed up as in Herzog`s ' Nosferatu ', after a great dose of highly-ass-kicing marocco hash. And that creepy shit coming out of the TV in Aphex Twin`s ' Come to daddy ' video during a mushroom trip. And in my dreams i`ve met recently John Constantine, Punisher and Benicio Del Toros character from ' The way of the gun '... as you see as a typical comic book-movie-counterculture kid i don`t expect to meet any higher , astral individuals ...

I rarely see known figures in dreams, certainly no real fameous people, but here are a couple I could recall:

Freddy Crugar used to make regular appearances in fairly standard slasher style, as per the movies, killing my friends and luringme into devious death traps, until I turned on him one and kicked his ass. Unsuprisingly, I haven't seen his like since.

Toth once as an 8 rayed star, in the midst of an Egyptian temple, to tell me about the Book of the Law. Was reason enough for me to finally break down, get over my opinions on Crowley and read it. For the curious who keep track of this sort of thing, he said book 4 was too dangerous, "the book of armegeddeon" or some such. I was amused to discover later that Crowley only wrote Lieber All as 3 books. Heh.

Nephestus (sp, wife of Set, I believe). My biggest clue as to that one being ledgit was my being struck suddenly and uncontrollably in love with her upon looking at her. That's a goddess for you.

Of the Loa, Damballah, Ogun and La Siren in dream, Oya in trance calling from a room away, though I didn't actually see her. In trance while drumming, Ogun and Legba.

In trance I wandered into the underworld den of Cerredwin once, I think. I could be off on that, I'm not too good with the Celts. It was the underworld goddess with the big cauldren. Cross the water to the island, under the island to the caverns, get drawn into room and dunked into cauldren, swim to surface back in the lake again. Serves me right for wandering into her yard, I guess.

I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I can recall right now.

Cripes! Rorkboy has just made me remember that Herzog's Nosferatu used to sneak quite pervasively in my early teen nightmares. Shit! First time I saw it was while inadvertently zapping channels at late night, feeling guilty that I should be asleep for school, and my first reaction was so strong I thought I was not going to be able to close my eyes in my cold bedroom without seeing it. Should have made friends back there with the repulsively bald Kinsky, or at least caress his veinous skull. I guess I have by now. I own a much dear copy of the movie in video.
