You have a wonderful board here, and I am duly impressed with the range of topics and discussions containined herein. Kudos. Cats, coffee, Call of Cthulhu, chocolate, "Cult Rapture", Chinese food, cinnamon, Cup-O'-Noodles, Cambodia, Crouching Tiger--Hidden Dragon, Crying Free Man, cilantro, caterpillars, calzones, curry, calliopes, Candide, cerveza, collage, cranberries, Cajun cooking, champagne, and Cynics (as in the Greek sort).

3.) Most underrated band of all time:

The duck-bill platypus.

Its a toss-up between Max Ernst, Hieronymous Bosch, and Winsor McCay.

1. Play Janis Joplin singing "Get It While You Can" at my funeral, and damn it, all you fucks better be crying.

2. I had a wet dream about being a prostitute and doing Drew Carey as my client. Sometimes I carpe the diem, and that's good. The cat is coiled up asleep in my black belt on the desk. She's cute when she's not destroying anything that isn't nailed down. And now I'm bored with reading the dictionary.

3. Most underrated band of all time: I don't understand "underrated" and "band."

5. Crows are the most underappreciated member of the animal kingdom. They take no shit.

6. Favorite artist of this week: I just downloaded a bunch of JPGs of Jan Saudek's work as screen savers. Genderfucked fat women and manipulated imagery, what's not to like?

8. My favorite occupation from antiquity is shaman. The real kind.

9. "Moulin Rouge" is without doubt the scariest movie of all time. People who can watch the whole thing, much less enjoy it, are pretty scary, too.

10. Currently listening to the neighbor across the street digging a hole in his front yard. Don't worry, too wide and shallow for his wife.

11. Just finished reading The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles, and before that The Carnal Prayer Mat by Li Yu. At the gym on the stationary bike, I'm reading The Sacred and the Profane by Mircea Eliade. At home I'll be starting next on The Heart of the Buddha's Teachings by Thich Nhat Hanh. Or some smut.

07:03 / 08.09.02
I'm not really so new, but my posts - no matter how I intend to be here more often - are few and far between. And I'm a survey junkie. So be it.

1. Song I would most like to be played at my funeral:

"In Spite of Me" by Morphine or "Going to Georgia" by the Mountain Goats

2. Things I Like That Start With the Letter "C":

in no particular order: coffee, cats, cuddles, children (so long as they belong to someone else at the end of the day), conversation, chardonnay (but red wine's always better), Catatonia, computers, chairs, chimes, Chistery (a monkey in Gregory Maguire's 'Wicked'), 'Cryptonomicon', "Car" by Built to Spill, and so on and so forth.

3. Most underrated band of all time:

Just one? Today I am for some reason inclined to say the Afghan Whigs. Critically acclaimed, perhaps, but not highly rated enough.

4. If I could be a cartoon character, I'd be...

It's already been said, but Bubbles. She's hardcore. And she says absolutely nonsensical things quite often, which is something I excel at.

5. Most underappreciated member of the animal kingdom:

The manatee.

6. Favourite artist of all time:

I really daren't show my ignorance by trying to answer this.

7. Future travel destination:

8. Favourite occupation from antiquity:

It seems like exciting things happen often in fiction to scribes.

boo
14:07 / 08.09.02
I suppose I am both a newbie and a parasitic oldbie (oldbie?!?), as I am Mazarine's boyfriend. As such, I've second-handed quite a bit of this board. But she tells me I must have my own voice, and so voila, Boo is born!

You may all be suitably jealous that, at the end of the day, I get to kiss Mazzy goodnight.

And now, on to the questionaire!

1. Song I would most like to be played at my funeral:

Hmm... for fun I'd say the chicken dance song, but in reality, I'd just prefer silence. I'm sure that whomever has to bury me won't be able to afford a band too.

2. Things I Like That Start With the Letter "C":

cookies, cabinets (in which there might be cookies), callendars, crisco (not to eat, just to watch), probably lots more but I'll spare you.

4. If I could be a cartoon character, I'd be...

Tenchi. Cool sword. Tons of girls. All for doing absolutely nothing : )

5. Most underappreciated member of the animal kingdom:

Plankton. It probably counts for half of the Earth's usable O2 and almost all of the ocean's primary productivity, but nobody cares cuz it's small. (by the way, I'm a masters student in ecology, evolution and behavior.)

6. Favourite artist of all time:

God, if she exists.

7. Future travel destination:

Montreal, where it is apparently drizzling.

8. Favourite occupation from antiquity:

Messengers, like the pony express.

9. Scariest movie of all time?

I haven't been scared by a movie in a long time, so I'll have to go with 'The Neverending Story'. Scared the crap out of me as a kid.

10. Currently listening to:

Pain, Touched by an Uncle, the downstairs neighbors having a very loud breakfast.

11. Currently reading:

'Wet Work' by Phil Nutman. Freaky little tale about an assassin whose prey were slaughtered by the zombies which are already rising and killing thousands. Very odd book, but good.

I can't believe people have already beaten me to *both* Chomsky and Catatonia - thanks for reminding me why I love Barbelith. I'll be the first to say Clipse and the word 'crunk', though.

3.) Most underrated band of all time:

The Auteurs. But only because straylight beat me to The Afghan Whigs.

4.) If I could be a cartoon character, I'd be...

Snoopy. "It's not the things that go bump in the dark I'm worried about, it's the things that go WAAAUURRRGGGHHH!"

5.) Most underappreciated member of the animal kingdom:

The armadillo. Has anyone said that yet? Even if they have: the armadillo. Y'all are sleeping on the armadillo (which can't be comfy).

6.) Favourite artist of all time:

Fave person ever who was an artist would be William Blake. But I'm tempted to say Philip Bond.

7.) Future travel destination:

Melbourne, Tokyo, San Franciso, Palestine, New York (again) - take your pick. And spot the one that would probably get me shot (clue - it's not NY).

8.) Favourite occupation from antiquity:

Consort.

9.) Scariest movie of all time?

That bit in Pearl Harbour where Ben Affleck & co bomb the shit out of the Japs and the triumphant music plays and everyone cheers is pretty terrifying. Notting Hill also disturbs me.

10.) Currently listening to:

The Afghan Whigs - Black Love and 1965; a compilation of Neptunes-produced stuff with particular attention paid to 'Grindin' by Clipse, 'Nothin' by N.O.R.E. and 'Shake Ya Ass' by Mystikal; the self-titled Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP; Outkast's Stankonia; various Catatonia stuff.

11.) Currently reading:

World Orders, Old and New, by Noam Chomsky; The Edward Said Reader, by some guy. And I'm sort of reading Justine, the first volume of Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet, except it's like eating treacle, so I keep taking breaks from it. Most of my fiction needs are being served by comics these days, in particular Paul Pope's 100%, New X-Men, X-Statix, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Part 2, and constant re-readings of Kill Your Boyfriend, Channel Zero and Couscous Express.

Our Lady of The Two Towers

Not new, but what the hell...

1) Song for my funeral.
Nirvana- 'All Apologies', or perhaps, if I'd been more positive while organising it, The Chemical Brothers 'Test' and Massive Attack 'Protection'.

4) If I could be a cartoon character, I'd be;
Henry's Cat. So I could look at my collar and find out what my name was.

5) Most under-appreciated member of the animal kingdom.
The scarab beetle. If it didn't push the sun up every day where would we be?

6) Favourite artist?
Banksy.

7) Future Travel Destination.
Maybe Vienna. I know travel is good for you but I just don't have the urge. Hell, visiting friends in the Midlands or on the coast is enough of a trauma...

8) Favourite occupation from antiquity.
Keeper of the vestal Virgins. Or maybe Pope. Back in the days where you could send entire countries out on pogroms. Ahhh, those were the days.

9) Scariest movie.
The Aliens movies. I have actually regressed now from the point where I could quite happily watch the first three to the point where I try not to think about them too much. Now I find the concept and the themes too disturbing. Strange.

10) Currently listening to.
Patti Smith, mainly the Land collection. Dandy Warhols. Boards of Canada. Brian Eno. Godspeed You Black Emperor! Sigur Ros.

11) Currently reading.
Just finished; 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' by Ken Kesey, currently reading 'use of Weapons' by Iain M. Banks, 'The Penguin Book of Twentieth Century Protest' edited by MacArthur and 'The Lazy Crossdresser' by Charles Anders.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
20:25 / 08.09.02
Not incredibly new, but hey. I always join in.

1) Funeral song- the music from "Godzilla & the Invasion of the Astro-Monsters". Just the right level of bombast, matched by an equal level of silliness. People will laugh, then feel guilty for laughing at a funeral. And I will laugh at them from beyond.

2) Things I like starting with "C"- cheese, chess and crap '80s bands.

3) Most underrated band of all time- Strawberry Switchblade.

4) If I could be a cartoon character, I'd be Invader Zim. All that intergalactic EEEVILLL, and a cute little robot doggy too!

5) Most underappreciated member of the animal kingdom- dogs. I know they're hardly ignored, but I don't think you can ever appreciate dogs enough. Oh, and badgers, too. (Anteaters or emus, if either/both of the above are disallowed).

6) Favourite artist of all time? I decline that question on the grounds of having the aesthetic sensibilities of a pencil.

7) Future travel destination? Cuba. While Castro's still alive. (Maybe Amis is right about us British lefties and our commie apologetics...)

8) Favourite occupation from antiquity? Explorer.

9) Scariest movie of all time? Hmm... "Audition" grossed me out, as did "Salo", but "The Shining" does it every time (it's those two kids...)

10) Currently listening to? Bobby Conn's "The Golden Age", David Byrne's "Look Into The Eyeball" and Alec Empire's "Intelligence and Sacrifice".

11) Currently reading? "Lullaby" by Chuck Palahniuk.

and
12) (or whatever the fuck we're up to)-
which is the crapper- Scrappy Doo or Godzookie?

cybernetics, computers, cats, and crayons.

3. Most underrated band of all time:

I don't know. The Rugburns?

4. If I could be a cartoon character, I'd be...

Dib. Someone has to stop aliens from invading Earth.

5. Most underappreciated member of the animal kingdom:

Spiders. They're really helpful, ya know? They don't deserve that whole, "Eww!! it's a spider! Kill it!! Kill it!!". Of course, if that doesn't count then, Squirrels. Nobody gives squirrels the respect they truly deserve.

6. Favourite artist of all time:

H.R. Giger or maybe Luis Royo. I don't know the names of many artists.

7. Future travel destination:
Arkansas, maybe? I'd love to attend classes here .

8. Favourite occupation from antiquity:

Swordsmith.

9. Scariest movie of all time?

Any of those made for TV movies starring the Olsen twins.

10. Currently listening to:

Beats the hell out of me. It's the local college station.

The Return Of Rothkoid
02:40 / 10.09.02
Ach, why the hell not?

  1. "Everything's Fucked" or "Authentic Celestial Music" by Dirty Three.

  2. Chocolate, chess, cheeks, chips, cooking, chapbooks, comestibles, carl cthulhu, crows, chaos, cathedrals, covers, crossings and C.

  3. Crow. Or The Necks, perhaps.

  4. Kif Kroker. Though I also feel a strange affinity to Johnny Bravo and that singing frog that only sings when hardly anybody's watching.

  5. The sloth. Everyone takes the piss, man.

  6. Probably Francis Bacon. But I have a thing for Joseph Cornell, Mark Rothko (duh) and Edward Hopper, too.

  7. London. As soon as fucking possible.

  8. Wastrel.

  9. Possibly parts of Ring. But Angel Heart comes kinda close, too.

  10. What's in my CD case today: Dirty Three Ocean Songs, Naked City Live Vol 1., Einsturzende Neubauten: Silence Is Sexy, Charles Mingus: Mingus At Antibes and The Clown, Crow: Li-Lo-Ing, John Zorn: Kristallnacht, Frenzal Rhomb: Meet The Family, Rammstein: Mutter, The Necks: Sex, Miles Davis: On The Corner and In A Silent Way, and Mr Bungle: Mr Bungle. But there's more going on at home.

  11. Prime Chaos by Phil Hine. And whatever comes out of my boxes of books when I get home.

LDones
03:52 / 10.09.02
Blargh, why not, here goes, new here, etc. Blargh

1. Song I would most like to be played at my funeral:

"Heart of the Sunrise"/"Sweetness" by Yes, or perhaps the version of "Fly Me To The Moon" off of the You're a Good Man Charlie Brown soundtrack. It wails. Or maybe 'Love Gun' by Kiss, with my coffin shooting into the ground like a flaming sword. Maybe not.

2. Things I Like That Start With the Letter "C":

Comics, cartoons, chaos, crotches, the word 'cunt' as a friendly denominator, crushing things metaphorically, conundrums, cuddliness, the word 'cock'

3. Most underrated band of all time:

I'm sure I haven't heard them. Possibly OIngo Boing, since they're fucking amazing and few people outside of California pay them much mind.

4. If I could be a cartoon character, I'd be...

Meowth. Or Jesse. Or James. I just want to be Team Rocket, really.

5. Most underappreciated member of the animal kingdom:

Children.

6. Favourite artist of all time:

If I stick with the visual medium, Van Gogh, though only because I'm a tad uncultured and seeing a Van Gogh up close is an experience and a half. If I go 'artist in general' then I'm far too indecisive to say, really. Though I might say Grant Morrison or Alan Moore and seem like a heinous fanboy, were I given the chance.

7. Future travel destination:

The year 3000, where a number of hip=hop artists believe rap will take over the universe, apparently.

8. Favourite occupation from antiquity:

Travelling actor/storyteller. Persecution aside, I think that would kick ass.

9. Scariest movie of all time?

Films don't tend to scare me, though Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust is probably the finest, most mindfucking example of Trojan Horse evil in filmmaking I've ever encountered.

10. Currently listening to:

Handsome Boy Modelling School, Lovage - Music to Make Love To Your Old Lady By, Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister, the latest Flaming Lips, The Shins

11. Currently reading:

Magick Without Tears, The Book of Thoth, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (over and over and over), Various Comics, The Barbelith Entity, Nietzche's The Birth of Tragedy, The Minds of the Unsuspecting
