Jesus turned water into wine.
Health Canada says I should have AT LEAST eight (8) glasses of water per day.
BEing both Christian and Canadian, can I deduce that church and state wants me to drink AT LEAST (8) glasses of wine per day.

Water toxicity is a terrible thing. You could dilute yourself to death! & W C Fields famously objected to drinking water on the grounds that "fish fuck in it" and he knew whereof he spake, *hic*. The healthy option would surely be maximum 1 glass of water and minimum 7 glasses of wine. Go for a good Rioja.

I read somewhere (not in a book!) that some medical scientists and dieticians (people like that, anyway) are no longer recommending the 8 glasses of water per day. They say drink when you're thirsty.

I expect this does not apply to when you're playing football and it's 95 degrees Fahrenheit...

I heard that on the radio, too - that the thirst mechanism is there for a reason. The chap I heard was saying that the mantra "if you feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated" makes as much sense as saying you must never ever let yourself feel hungry, but scoff food all the time.

I like that second theory, actually.

Most top-end atheletes eat 6 small meals rather than 3 large ones. A lot of them actually wake up once or twice a night to drink a protein shake. A constant stream of nutrients into your body is far better for muscle growth and an increase in your resting metabolic rate.

One of the first things suggested to people wanting to lose weight is to break up their meals into smaller, more frequent portions.

My experience is this:

Working on a film a couple of years ago a few friends and I were really feeling shite every day. We deduced that we weren't drinking enough water, and started a regimen of sorts. I started drinking seven to ten half-liter bottles a day. Felt better without a doubt. But then, that was under fairly stressful and hot (film lights) conditions. So I still buy the idea that a constant flow of water is good.
