Gun sales in the US since Tower Day

There have been claims of a massive increase in gun sales since the WTC attacks.

"People are finally realizing they have to take care of themselves. The police can’t protect them.... People are not sitting on the fence [any] more. They’re taking action."

"We have also had a lot of people wanting to buy the evacuate hoods (with built-in gas masks). We tried to quell those fears in a hurry because we don't want to be out here capitalizing on people's fears."

John Abene, owner of Jack's Gun Shop in Tampa, said Wednesday that he is seeing something he has never seen before: families coming in together to look at guns and buy them. "I'm literally seeing family units taking the initiative to arm themselves in the proper fashion," Abene said.

Another point of view:

"What we found was that basically the American public is not buying guns. Fifty percent of the stores responded that their sales were normal," said Doug Painter, executive director. "Only 13 percent reported selling more guns than usual. Everyone seemed to focus in on that 13 percent. ... There just hasn't been much of a change in the gun-buying habits of most Americans."
