Why?

It's bad luck, because the moon laughed when Ganesh fell and He cursed it. So in this day its extremely bad luck to look at the moon.

Wow, verrry interesting - because last year on Ganesh's day, not knowing this bit of info., I actually stared at the moon, meditating on it and said a prayer/mantra to Ganesh over and over.

Sooooo, basically I won't be doing that this year. Thanks for the tip.

Is the Chaturi today? Or is it ....

>> Tuesday 26th September - Chathurthi Thiruvilzha

as listed in one of the above links (don't know what Thiruvilzha is)? I did a google search looking for which day is Ganesh's special day this year, and it didn't yield much of anything.

Hmm, I knew nothing of this holiday but Ganesh has been on my mind lately… interesting. In fact I just came from an Indian restaurant thinking about Ganesh right before I saw this post.

The new moon is the 22nd so I guess it would be the 26th?

Although I know next to none on all things Hindu.

Any relation? Or side-effect?

I'd say neither DM. But it is a nice thought and i'm sure that Ganapati wouldn't mind if you wanted to celebrate those things in his name.

The major Ganesh Chaturi celebration in Mumbai finished yesterday.

The festival here in Vadodara(Gujarat) was huge! Although I could not join the main festive throng because of employment commitments, I did pass the many parades going to and from work over the 4 days I was here for it. I really wanted to get some pictures of the massive Ganesh statues and post them but I didn't get the chance. People with pink flourescent powder reminicent of the Holi festival around Easter adorned most people's faces and clothing. The roads are still stained with it in some places.

I saw about 4 main statues that people congregated around, and again this was due to caste seperation. Different Ganesha's for different Castes but the same feelings of joy, celebration and expectation. I took my own mini Ganesh statue out of my laptop case today, one I have had for a year now, and put it next to my training notes and the locals here were fascinated I even showed the slightest interest in their beliefs. I explained that the Hindi Gods are spread far and wide and have some recognition where I come from at least. During my year and a half here(on & off) I must say that Ganesh is the most popular deity where I have been so far. All of my drivers, who drive me to and from work, ALL have a Ganesha stuck to the car dash board and a stick of incense burning. Traffic is hugely chaotic and when we come close to having a crash, the driver touches his feet and says thanks. I'm still kicking myself I didn't get some pics, I saw some really awesome parades with some stunning costumes, statues and gleeful music. Next up is Diwali, the Festival of Light, but alas I will be back home for that.

I am intrigued. Could you talk more about this practice and its significance?

Touching the feet is a sign of respect, I think/presume? I should have said along with the feet touching comes a very quick prayer motion with a short head bow. I am sure that it doesn't just stop with Ganesh either, I think all deities get their feet touched as well as holy men like Sai Baba and I think it also extends to Village leaders, people who are in a position of "spiritual" authority. There are small shrines dotted beside roads in every city I have been to so far. Small boxes that contain effigies of a favourite God, surrounded by incense and orange flowers. The Orange Flower necklace is very common, and they are for sale at many road side stalls all over the place. I have seen people standing in line waitng for their turn to pay their respects to their God, kneeling and touching feet and I am certain a small prayer is said along with this ritual too.

Whoops, I was totally wrong, the current festival is the Durga Puja festival and all of India was getting ready for another big celebration. I think India has the most festive holidays in the world!

do we know when the next Ganesh Chitauri is? I remember that last year's was around September 4. Just curious... I know it moves around and is usually in late Aug/early-mid September.

Which is my birthday. So everyone, get ready to honor Ganesh and have your wishes come true, boundaries/obstacles broken through, etc. I like that Ganesh guy.

I'm uber-excited. I just recently got seriously involved with Ganesha (not like that, silly!) and I've been stoked about the idea of doing a full on statue and tent in the yard.
Ganesh seems pretty chill, so far. He's down with the Chaos approach which is pretty cool. He does expect you to be generous in your gratitude, I find.

Thanks for getting this year's date, FinderWolf. I have many reasons to praise and thank Lord Ganesha these days.

A couple of days ago, I came across this cute nine-minute animated video (on youtube) about what happens after the Ganesh Chaturti idol immersion. Here's a link for anyone who's interested:

Om Gam.

"Happy birthday, Lord Ganesha!"

"You are speech. You are consciousness. You are bliss. You are Brahman. You are being, consciousness, bliss. You are the nondual. You are clearly Brahman. You are knowledge. You are intelligence."

Om Sri Ganesha Namah.

"Hail to you, Chief of the Ganas! Born of the depthless love of Parvati the All-Mother! Perfected by the destructive creation of your father Shiva! One-tusked Patron of writers! Round-bellied curser of the Moon! Axe wielder! Noose bearer! Mouse rider! Protector and Awakener of Kundalini! Guardian of all gates! Tireless Guide of all journies! Lotus offerer! Sweets devourer! Master of all categories! Lover and provider of Wisdom, Prosperity, and Attainment! A hundred thousand welcomes to you, twisted-trunk Master! A hundred million thanks to you, tireless bestower of boons!"

Om Hare Om, Hare Ganapati.
Om Hare Om, Hare Ganapati.
Om Hare Om, Ganapati, Ganapati.
Om Hare Om, Hare Hare.

"With open heart and true devotion, I ask your blessings, Ganesha! Please remove the obstacles and guide me in my journies as father, as husband, as neighbor, as writer, as seeker! Strength, creativity, perseverence, wisdom, joy, song, and sweets!"

Om Gam.

Ta, luv.

Ganagati, I'm totally stealing that image fer my desktop.

Addressed the Boon-Giver last night (OM VARADA GANAPATI) and asked that he help me get a job. I have my sights set on one in particular, and have a friend-of-a-friend in the department who's got my resume and contact info. I want this job. I NEED this job. And I need all the help I can get in securing it. So I called to Ganesh, explained the situation and how important this was to me and my family. So we'll see. The next part is in his hands, I think, and it's down to me to prep for the best. To that end, I spent some considerable time yesterday on a logo for my design business and will negotiate today to get a web portfolio set up. I also need to reorganize my physical portfolio for maximum interview impact. Combined with other efforts by friends on my behalf, I'm nervously confident(?).
