Whatever happened to the Collective?

The Barbelith Collective weblog, to which I just posted for the first time in ages, seems to be solely made up of Rollo.

Let's get it up and rolling again - things which Barbelith would discuss, cool stuff, moments of reflection...

I'd be willing to join the collective...I keep a blog on my site, and enjoy doing so, but it might be fun to have it here as well.

Anyone know if there will be any new members accepted?

I wouldn't mind doing this either, I don't have the patience or imagination to do it all on my own, collectively though... takes something else on. A bit like a giant beehive full of weird little bees.

I wouldn't normally post to the Collective blog but it seemed like no one else was making the effort to keep it going. I'm sure it could still be something useful but I'm not sure if Tom's thinking of ditching it?

I'd be happy to post entries to the Collective, but alas, I do not have access to it.

In the mean time, Logos has this set up, which has a goodly number of Barbelith blog links. Courtesy of Logos.

Whats the point of the collective?

Do we need it? Does it serve a different purpose than the webzine? Would links to individual blogs (hidden in the user profiles) serve the same purpose?

I think htere were big plans for the Collective originally. The main Collective blog tended to be used as a 'headlines' section, made up of links to a huge variety of different news items.

It was a way of presenting information that the board as a whole might have wanted to discuss or expand on without having to start threads that nobody took up.

It worked for a short while. I guess people stopped posting to it (except for Rollo, who's been doing a sterling job - and yes, I have been reading it regularly) for a number of reasons. For me it was mainly a vague suspicion that nobody outside of the Collective was reading it, making it a pointless exercise. The other problem I saw was that it was visibly falling apart; the individual blogs that were supposed to be an integral part of that section of the site were either infrequently updated (big up to Kirk Nice and his "I've had enough, I'm leaving," strop) and, once the template was changed, no longer linked to from the main page. Add to that the never-working Harbin blog, the death of Flyboy's blog and the very odd way that Nick's never changed template with the rest of them.

What I liked about it originally was that it really did feel like a community, and one that was distinct from the Underground. I think the idea is still tenable. For what little it's worth, I've been meaning to start contributing to it again recently, just forgetting.

Now that is the most bizarre thing. I had my own blog and I never knew that one existed.

I don't know whether to be guilty or amused.

You should feel in pain, actually. From the big punch to the nose I just performed upon you.

Well if you'd ever mentioned it...

No doubt the world is full of things like this. The hidden Evil Genius Island someone built for me and neglected to mention, the huge gold bullion deposit registered under my name at the Bank of Grand Cayman...

If anyone else knows of something like this, do drop me a line. I will be generous when I control the Galaxy...

Strangely I stopped looking at them right about the time Tom did a redesign and removed people's names from the top. I've got a few people's favourited from there but it's very much a random bored afternoon that I'd look at the thing...

My blog continues to work as a sort of slow-motion one .. updated about once a month since I realised that the whole daily/frequently/weekly thing just wasn't gonna happen.. pathetic, I know..

Is there anyway to set up some sort of rotation system? It seems that there are some people who would like to take a crack at it who can take the place of those people who drop out. Not sure how it would work, but I it might be a refreshing change for a neat concept.
