Prehistoric mammals

I'm trying to find a good site on prehistoric mammals. Specifically, I'm interested in finding out the name of this extinct proto-hippopotamus-type critter, but any leads at all would be helpful; my web-fu seems to be unequal to this task.

It's for this thing, all right?

Baluchitherium?

Nah, not Baluchitherium, it's a little guy. Relatively. But it's still useful-- thanks.

Y'know, it would really help if we had an idea which era this beastie belonged to.

You always send me off on the most wonderfully ludicrous searches...I'm having fun with this one.

By the way:

Pakicetus attocki.

More.

I also keep finding articles by angry creationists, snippy hippo-fanciers delighted that the hippo is now associated with the whale rather than the pig, and one rather gruesome shop where they sell animal skulls.

It would, but I haven't a clue. All I know is that it looked a bit like a hippo but with these wierd tusk/teeth things that stuck out of its mouth, sort of horizontal.

I've been working on this story, y'see, and I needed this stuff for background. Story's pretty much finished now (you can have a read of it if you're interested), but reading about all these critters has given me a couple of ideas for future projects.

One of these nice people ought to be able to help you!

I'm delighted to discover that there is such a thing as a Sarkastodon, but disappointed to discover that it was not noted for stunning its prey with astringent and ironic humour. Creodonts are less exciting than I would wish, though I did wonder whether the Arsinoitherium might be your chap.

But wait! Could it be that the humble Moeritherium 2 is your bunny? Moeritherium looked quite different. In the mangrove forests of the late Eocene it filled the role of a hippo.

But they're a bit small at 4 feet high and 6.5 feet long.

I want a gold star.

You get a big shiny gold star, and you can be blackboard monitor, too. But none of those are my bunny (or small burrowing mammal that might, in the fullness of time, give rise to bunnies). My bunny is actually wierder even than these.

You're kidding? I was so sure I'd nailed it with that last one. More details, please!

Like I said: Tusks. Long ones. Sticking out of its lower jaw and over its bottom lip, so its mouth never really closed. Looked sort of like a prehistoric Roy Hattersly.

Anyhow, like I say I've finished the story, working around the proto-hippo issue-- I'll be trying to flog it somewhere in the next day or two. If you're still up for random Googling then that's great, coz I still can't find this guy. Otherwise, take a half-holiday.

Thanx, but I already have that link. Normally I wouldn't mention that I already have that link, but in this case my already having that link means that I've out-web-fu-ed grant. *Dances*

Hmm. I know I've actually done a piece on those things you're describing, and they're related in some way to Pakicetus, but not as much in the whale lineage.

Humbug.

I bet it's an extinct hyrax. Or else one of the beavers from After Man.
