Coldplay: A Rush of Blood to the Head

I've just bought this as a pressie for Snapping Turtle - my first impressions are that it's a lot better than Parachutes, there's about a third of it I'm really enjoying. Clocks has instantly sucker-punched me by sounding a lot like the best A-Ha stuff (a real selling point if you're a member of the 'Less family): dripping with soul, glassily atmospheric, well-constructed-but-not-intrusive drumming and a melody to die for, just really pretty stuff.

What do people think of this band? I'm undecided about them as a whole, as they seem to put out a lot of tunes that sound like the colour of washing up water after a casserole. Can't deny that some of their stuff is transcendent, though.

Forever and eternally linked to Toploader, who I have always, and will always hate since they were on ITV midday on a Saturday, long before their first album, saying how they released seven inches "cois no one has a space for them in their record collections" and going on about how great the nightlfie in Eastbourne was. No, really.

Um... that's totally off track. I don't know why they are linked. But they are. And I don't feel like getting over this linkage anytime soon. They're like the Sugababes, in that I have way too much vested in my always and eternal hatred of them that I'll never be able to like them until I atleast leave for university.

I have, however, forgiven the Sugababes. Because I'm nice and forgiving like that.

Erm... yeh. Coldplay. Hate 'em. Die. Grr. "I thought I was gay!". Fucking tosser.

It's easy to beat celebs up for the stuff they spout in interviews, BUT this:

"going on about how great the nightlife in Eastbourne was...."

Jesus!

I grew up very near Eastbourne and I'm telling you that "The Odyssey" and under 18 rave nights and old people and british flag waving B'n'B's and french crops and fighting do not a good night out make.

Eastbourne....fucking hell...

Erm... I haven't read any interviews with Coldplay, so all I can judge them on is *shrug* the sounds they make. I liked the singles from 'Parachutes' (even if 'Yellow' became indelibly associated in my mind with Alan McGee's 'bedwetters' comment, making me think of wee-wee) I'm tempted by 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. I really liked a lot of A-Ha's stuff too, Expressionless, so that's an additional recommendation.

I don't like the sonds they make either, if it helps. I'm also not giving them a chance, I know that. I like hating them. It's fun. I get that it's totally irrelevant, but it's also fun. On the one hand, it could be argueed that this sort of comment isn't suited to this forum, but I disagree. Music envokes emotions, and their music envokes that emotion. So blah.

That said, this probablly isn't the thread for Toploader...

if someone could point me in the direction of this haolwed "transcendent" stuff, I might thank you. At least in private. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough, but I really can't hear anything in them other then the sound of Radiohead fans who feel cheated by Kid A cumming in their sleep.

It's kind of in my contract to hate Coldplay with a vengence and never even give them a chance. Sorry.

A friend of mine knows them really well and I've met them a few times (at demos, believe it or not) - they're actually really nice, which inclines me to be less vitriolic about them than, say, Travis. The music's okay, Chris Martin has a really good voice, but it just doesn't really get me that excited. I'd say good, but not exciting...

Okay, why does everyone in London know someone who knows Coldplay? Weird...

Anyway, I was all ready to make some jokes about sudden gushes of blood from the head and all that, but the truth is, that new single's a bit of a grower, isn't it? Better than 'Yellow', an awful lot better than 'Trouble' (if that piano riff had been part of a trance song, it would have been universally and quite rightly laughed out of the shop for its insipid sappyness), and yes, not EVIL in the way Travis are, quite (but then what is?).

Gah, what am I saying?

It's ok, I feel the same. I was also shocked and appalled to find myself thinking such things, but it's a keraaazzeeeeeeeeee world we live in, eh?

Their drummer was in the year below me at school. He may have been in Mr Alman's drum club with me. I can't remember... the only things I can recall from drum club were:

1) Telling my mate Duncan that he was shit on drums.

2) Calling Mr Alman "Brother Alman" because he was monkbald.

3) Getting told off for hitting his brand new crash too hard. What a numpty: they're cymbals, you're morally and spiritually obliged to hit them hard. Any dick who sticks rivets in any cymbal that isn't a china deserves to get his shiny new crash broken.

(This post was bought to you by the same twisted demonic force that inhabits most of pin's burblings)

*yawn* coldplay makes me want to sleep. Kill myself or sleep, depending on my mood.
