Shitting myself...

Off travelling on Monday, I didn't expect it to be so emotional - one minute I'm excited, then I'm sad, lonesome, scared...leaving my mates and all that. Saying goodbyr to my family for at least a year...

Does anyone have any advice? 'cause I really need it. How should I handle these last few days?

Help!

I know what you mean. I'm off to the US in a bit, I just had my last day at work in this country today, and frankly... I'm fucking bricking it. The whole thing is incredibly stressful, the idea leaving everything you know behind.

I don't have any real advice, I'm listening in to see what people say here, but what I like to tell myself is - if you can handle this shit, you can handle anything in the future. You're proving you're a truly independent and self-confident person.

You're off for a year's travel, aren't you? Bloody hell, I'm so envious...

You could immerse yourself in the last-minute practical details - getting addresses, email, bank details, emergency contact numbers, etc. Depending where you're going, you might want to stock up on UK-specific trinkets to take with you (in India, schoolkids all ask you for sweets, and pens - even crappy Bic biros - go a long way, especially if they're emblazoned with the Union Jack). It's useful to make a note of your various measurements in case you decide to have clothes made (ZoCher and I bought dodgy Oasis-esque nehru-collared suits the last time we were in Goa) and, if you wear glasses, take your prescription with you.

Or you could do the time-honoured thing and get pissed, lairy and sentimental. Just don't do that Sunday night...

I really like travelogues (anyone remember the 'Elephant Head Trip'?) and I hope you're gonna check in now and again to keep us updated. Start a thread (in Conversation, maybe, or Creation) and do the whole Kerouac fantasy thang.

Wish you well. I think you're really really gonna enjoy this.

I too am going travelling on Monday, back to the scepted isle. Finished my last day at work today as well.

My advice to all parties, don't sweat it. Wish fulfilment is a bad thing and when it comes down to it most of the crap that you may or may not encounter is easily dealt with by using common sense and patience.

Wow, envy sent your way. I took my first 1 year trip when I was 18. The problem is not what to do before you leave, it's what to do when you come back! Hence the start of a 5 year tour of backpacking that only ended when I met my stay in the country hubby. But I'm working on it and soon will have him globetrotting. Guys you are about to go on one of those adventures that people will always say, 'wow, I wish I'd done that!' and regardless of whether there will be bad times (and there will be some surely) it will be a cool learning experience and memory for the rest of your life. Get excited.. the adventure is about to begin!

Second all that jealousy, Pandaboy. Just make sure to send us all virtual postcards from wherever you are. I seem to recall you were heading to Egypt, lucky bastard! ENJOY! The nerves are inevitable (because you're doing a brave and exceptional thing) but you are going to learn so much and see marvellous things. Good for you.

Oh you lucky bastard! Have a mental time, don't get ill/abducted/eaten. Going away's always scary (not that I've ever been away for very long), but once it happens I bet you'll love it. Let us know how you're doing if/when you get a chance.

Nice one! I've always wanted to go to San Francisco. You gonna visit Barbary Lane, the Armistead Maupin stuff? Or is that mainly a poof thang?

My first priority is to make some friends in this hostel I'm staying in. It's well weird. Tomorrow, I'm off down to the panhandle to get mugged...

I did meet a nice gay bloke named William on the plane on the way over. He was great. (Gave excellent head) o)
