Ninth Art has a handy weekly feature called the shipping forcast which lists all comics due each week as well as spotlighting a few of them.

As for topic sumaries they are necessary (if i get this explanation right) for RSS navigation of this site - not everyone is checking out barbelith using a old style browser anymore.

As for x-statix-

very interesting how 0-force's first mission diddn't end in the blood shed that x-force's (very similar) first mission did.

Phat's 'unresolved issues' nicely contrasted with edie's although Edie- despite being forced to see her daughter - used more drugs rather than rely simply on any cathartic interaction with her family to get her powers back on track...

Now now, there's no need for that sort of language. This is a children's book we're discussing, after all.

undo, there are several sites where you can check and see when a book's coming out (popcultureshock, comicscontinuum, milehighcomics, etc).

As far as topic abstracts go, I'm not sure if they're totally essential for this sort of thread.

And so issue #2. The Allred's art on this is so consistently beautiful. I hope Marvel sticks w/ the higher quality paper, because it really makes all the colors stand out much better than when it's on the pulpier stuff.

What happens? More Arnie stuff, the group goes up against a dirty bomb, we see where Venus Dee Milo spends her free time, 'the Anarchist' starts referring to himself in the 3rd person, there are legal proceedings.

Also, heard somewhere that Paul Pope is going to be doing the art for #5. Seems that they've done a much better job w/ guest artists (Cooke, Fegredo) than over at 'New X-Men'...

It's important to have the topic abstracts, because it makes it easier for people to search the forums. So, in the case of this thread, the abstract should read "X-Statix #2, by Peter Milligan and Mike Allred". This makes it much easier for other people and folks looking for old threads. Please be considerate of others here, and play by the rules.

Paul Pope is doing #5, it was solicited by Marvel earlier in the week.

This is from Pope's website:

'Following the May 2002 release of Pope's solo guest spot in the pages of SPIDER-MAN'S TANGLED WEB (#15), Pope will be drawing an issue of the new X Men comics, X-Statix (#5), from a script by Pete Milligan. "Against my better judgement, I like this book, and I'm looking forward to doing it," says Pope. On sale this November.'

'Against [his] better judgement'? Whaaa?

Anyway. I'm liking Spike Freeman more and more. All of his little underhanded schemes, his 'never go into battle against a kid' rules, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a mutant, too.

pope still hanging on to his arsiest artist in comics award. he can draw like a motherfucker though, and it'll be good to see him on a comic that possibly won't have a small girl as its lead character. i like the fill-in artists because allred always seems to be able to turn in an even better job when he comes back. as for xstatix 2, did it feel like a bit af a filler like someone said in the pub last night? too slug-festy, the guy/tike thing seemed like a weird scott/logan parody? doop is only in one panel though it's not clear how many panels SHe forms the pov of. the arnie idea feels like a shade classic, and doesn't sit that well next to the personality clash soapstuff going on in the team. they'll get it all back together by remembering not to forget their fans won't they? aah cute...

Actually sinning back to a conversation we had a little while ago in an newxmen thread - Spikeis one of the few human's that regularly interacts with mutants - Spike is also showing how humanity is assimilating mutants into the dull mundane world of normality - spike is the one with the money- he's the one that has to think about things like rights isues.

Spike is the respectable face of mutantkind precisely because he is not one of them. -He's like the white record producer that loves all that negro music - without him to play the press etc. the X-statics wouldn't exist - they wouldn't have careers, they wouldn't be famous - they'd just be some other mutant wanabees.

I do have a sneaking suspicion that on some kind of level spike *wants* to be a mutant (bu without giving up all the privilidges being a human offers him of course) - What i'd be interested in is who spike starts dating - if he ever does - i can imagine him dating mutant after mutant - him keen to get some of their reflected mutant glory and them all looking to get into the x-statics off sleeping with him (or get ther own tv show, or whatever)

Trying to see the Xtatix from the Marvel universe POV. When Prof. Xavier is postulating new ways in politics and learning for mutants, when the mutants are starting to develop their own society and way of life; Spike Freeman manages to chain many mutants into the human (ape?) way of life. In many ways they are jumping backwards. Mutanthood does not try to integrate into humanity, but to create their own space. X-Force/Xtatix are mutants integrated into the wheels and cogs of the human society, they have become the media gods. Remember Poptopia? (in UXM). The question now is: how do other mutants see Xtatix and OForce? We saw an U-Go girl add in Genosha, Were they seen as the avant-garde of the mutant society? And How does Prof. X think of them?

i think prof x is with them all away. people don't like mutants, but they like celebrities.

fill in? nah.

Milligan is taking this in the right direction. His favourite themes are rising...

notice the constant of a protaginist/character having something done unto them beyond their control (thalidomide skinhead, kano with half his brain removed and swapped with an alien one, and now this little boy with the melted face and mutant powers) and their desire to exact revenge on 'society' at large.

It's even there in Enigma.

I reckon we'll move away from the 'celebrity' scene fairly soon: it'll be more about relationships and the darkness of human interaction.

A good fight between the team managers is brewing too.

Milligan is master at twisting links and clues all over the place before revealing the full picture and I'm intrigued as the the edie/fucked boy connection...

I wouldn't be surprised if Arno (whose powers seem fairly limitless) offers to bring Edie back from the dead for Guy, causing no end of ethical angst...
