I'm off to San Francisco in a weeks time and am looking for a few pointers on things to do in and around Everyone's Favourite City. I've never been before (or to anywhere in the sates for that matter). Got a conference for a week then I'm taking a week off to laze around and be amazed.

I'm looking for anything, but the weirder the better, giant balls of twine, sideshow museums and hippy communes adrift in time. I'm sure I can bump into most of the other touristic type attractions by myself or with the help of a lying planet.

Fire away... and a virtual chocolate fish to the weirdest.

Cliff House/Sutro Baths.

Do not miss.

The Musee Mechanique used to be there, but I hear it's moved to the Wharf....

Don't miss that, either.

San Fran may be suffering from a gigantic post-Burning Man hangover.

There are little bits of weird all over the city. Pagan shrines in Golden Gate Park, the monument to a socialite's lust for firemen, and of course there's The Haight and South of Market districts...

My friends just opened up a great little bar called sublounge (http://www.subloungesf.com), where I DJ on Thursday (and some other) nights. Great music (house, mostly), and friendly, mellow people.

Other fun things:

1. I second the Sutro Baths idea. But realize that it's non-functional, and more of an interesting mini-hike (VERY mini). Man, it would be cool if someone renovated those... The weird proto-Disneyland fake cliffs above the Cliff House are surreal.

2. See what's going on at Cellspace (http://www.cellspace.org/)

3. There's probably some kind of post-Burning Man "Decompression" party, if you're looking to do some weird-watching (http://www.burningman.com)

4. Go up the Pacheco Ave hill in the Sunset, and look down over the Pacific Ocean.

5. Go to eat at my girlfriend's wonderful new restaurant (http://www.incanto.biz) and have her make you the best salads (and the Italian food is outstanding) in SF.

6. Eat a hamburger at Carousel (aka the Doggie Diner) at the end of Sloat, by the Zoo.

7. Go to Point Reyes in the North Bay, and WALK the two or three miles to the beach, which should be EMPTY during the week, and is breathtakingly beautiful (I'm reading AHWOSG and Eggers sums up CA with this:

"We run back across the highway, back into the red Civic and keep driving. Past the surfers, through the eucalyptus forest before Half Moon Bay, birds swooping up and over then back, circling around us - they too, for us! - then the cliffs before Seaside - then flat for a little while, then a few more bends and can you see this motherfucking sky? I mean, have you fucking BEEN to California?" )

8. On that note, take Highway 1 to Santa Cruz (my hometown), and hit the beach there, stop at Cafe Pergolesi ("Pergs") for coffee on the way out.

9. Get an expensive-but-worth-every-penny haircut from Angela at AuTop salon downtown.

10. Stop by Aquarius Records on Valencia, for record shopping with the indier-than-thou crowd.

11. Record shopping at Amoeba, which has pretty much everything EVER.

12. Take a salmon fishing cruise out into the bay, and catch your own HUGE bay salmon.

That's all I can think of for now - have fun!

Cafe Pergolesi rocks!!!

If you're on The Height, walk the handful of blocks north to Panhandle Park... Or betteryet there's Buena Vista Park (make it to the top for a great Sunset View) or Golden Gate (great fun on a sunny Sunday).

If you're into Baseball there's PacBell park but Oakland A's play for much less hop onto B.A.R.T. for the trip to the east Bay. While in the East Bay hit Berkeley... Telegraph Ave. is entertaining. Tilden Park is Amazing Nature.

Ocean Beach can be fun come night fall. South of The Cliff house/Sutro Baths... However China Beach is the Best if you can find it. Baker Beach is easier to find & clothing optional.

The Metreon is Fun if you're into a Tech-Mecha. Movies, I-Max... Arcade with games designed by Moebius!!! RightNext to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts!!!

Also The MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) is not too far from the Cliff House & also close to the Palice of Fine Arts.

CELL SPACE is always fun & full of the coolest Peeps... Say hello to Moon-Doggie

Food's Great all around, Tai & Africian.

The Mission District for The Latino Flavor. Lots of Fun Night spots around Valencia, Mission & around 14-17th streets...

Follow Market street Southwest to the Castro for 24 hour eating. and rainbow flags.

IF you've got wheels take the Bay bridge east & get of at Yerba Buena Island for the best view of San Fran, especially just before Sunset.

San Fran could be COLD this time of year... have a coat just in case!!!

North Beach is Touristy & leads to Fisherman's Warf... The ultimate Tourist's place!!!

Have a Blast!!!
