More tales from the Bastard City.

I was walking around downtown one sunday morning looking for a bathroom. No one would even look me in the eye except the police, who, in their own words, "can afford to do so because we are armed".

A cop was on a routine noise complaint in East Detroit when she knocked on the door of a house with a loud barking dog. The guy opened the door and shot her five times before a word was said.

A week before that, in the same part of town, no more than a few streets away, a mother left her two year old daughter in her room for half a minute when she heard her daughter's screams from outside. She ran out the back door to find a man raping her two year old daughter while another man looked on. She screamed for her cousins living next door, who got a posse toghether and ran after the two guys. They ended up catching one at a bank and beat the fuck out of him. A couple guys in the angry mob were on the news saying "yeah, dis is dat nigga's blood on my shirt here. If I see the other one again, there's no telling what I'll do. I jes' might rip dat nigga's head off. I'll prolly kill 'em." He said this on camera, in front of policemenl They put it on the damn news.

A cop was caught robbing people he pulled over a couple weeks ago.

As of this july, thirteen children (all under two) have been killed in drive-bys in this city in this year alone. All of them accidental, so that doesn't include the number of children in this city killed on purpose.

A cop was telling me about a guy on PCP that took ten shots to the head before he died. "He had only half a brain left and he was tossing cops around like dolls. Like the fucking incredible hulk or something".

Interesting note: Detroit supposedly has the highest number of african-americans living in a single city in America. Detroit is right next to Livonia, which has the highest concentration of white people for a city over 100,000. Livonia and Detroit are right next to Redford, which has the highest number of arab-americans living in a single county. Remember the race riots? That was caused by the "white flight", when hundreds of thousands of white people moved out of Detroit in a single decade, leaving a predominantly black society with a nearly all white police force.

Last week, a policeman was posted up on a corner in east Detroit, sitting in his squad car, when three guys in ski masks robbed him.

I fucking hate this city. The only advantage of living here is that I'll never be afraid of any city in america again, because it's no worse than home. It can't be. People here don't even think when they're going to do something shady. Shooting a cop in broad daylight? In front of your own home? That guy was shot by the other cop in the car out front. He didn't even think twice about shooting a policewoman. What the hell.

This place is changing me. When I was in Atlanta this week, people found me intimidating. I'm so used to staring down whoever crosses my path that I do it involuntarily. I've actually asked someone "what the fuck are you staring at, asshole?". I didn't know 'em or anything. They just walked by me on the street and gave me a dirty look.

And the worst part is, you have to be that shady here. You can't trust anyone. Your own boys will rob you.

Tell me, if you can, how your city is scarier than mine. Or just plain worse to live in in any aspect. Just try.

Someone I know used to live in Detroit. One day he was walking somewhere with his dad, and some dude robbed his dad and blew his fucking brains out right in front of him. Doesn't D.C. have a higher murder rate then detroit though? I thought it was the highest.

That's funny.

I think you should move away. Seriously, somewhere with lots of flowers and less guns.

Yeah...Washington is pretty bad. They call it "The Murder Capital of the World" for extra dramatic effect. I'm not sure if this means only capital cities, but I do remember meeting my friend's cousin when he was young and learning that he was shot the month before while walking his dog.

Leave! Immediately! Why stay if you don't have to - as you say, it's having a dehumanising effect on you.

Makes my part of the world seem fairly peaceful, but I'm in east London - there are quite a few guns around, but it's not like America. Yet. After the fun I had the other day avoiding being hit by the missile a man was hurling at another at a bus stop, I met a friend and she said she'd seen a woman being held in an headlock by a young man who was punching her repeatedly in the face. This was on the platform of a bus. It appears that she'd tried to get on in front of him. On her way to meet me, she'd had to avoid part of Hackney, which was cordoned off because of another murder.

We don't have police patrolling a beat any more. Well, there are some, but usually they just respond to incidents, eventually anyway. I'm wondering if I would actually feel any safer if they were around more.

Well I think I can now safely say that if/when I visit the states, Detroit isn't going to be on my "to do" list.

I believe it does, actually. But Detroit still holds at number one for the violent crime rate.

The thing is, though, as much as I hate this city, I have to respect a place where even cops get robbed, if not just for the fact that it makes nearly every other city in America look better.

Ganesh: Are you Frank Miller?

Yes. ...oh, wait, no.

Ick. I don't think I could stand living in a place like that for five minutes. I think I'd go to pieces. Of course, I live in Cushy Central, where you can pretty much walk around any time of day or night, anywhere in town, and not have to worry about being harassed. Unless you consider panhandling harassment.

well, at least you should read Slaughtermatic by Aylett to see an example of a crazier city... even if it can only exist in fiction...

Holy shit.

I'd suggest you move to Ojai, but the culture shock would probably kill you. People there still leave their front doors unlocked when they go out.

Come here to swansea.
It's got crime but when I first lived somewhere else I got confused cos noone said hello on the street on chatted to you in bus/supermarket queues.
I agree, a day somewhere like that would do my head in, get away if you can.
Sometimes the whole of america sounds like a terrifying place to live, all we ever hear are the bad, violent things.

Fucking hell, man. London scares the living shit out of me at times, but at least it's big enough that the horror doesn't seem so... concentrated. Plus there's fewer guns around; although gun crime is on the up, most of our casual murderers still use knives or baseball bats.

Johnny, DO NOT tell this to mom, but last night I got mugged as I was walking back to my apartment through the Hill District. Someone lowered the boom on me but good. I guess that's what you get when you're a drunk white kid walking through the ghetto at 4am.
