The guy just won an Eisner for "Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition", wrote a beautifully Capra-esque tale of a town of true comics appreciators in HICKSVILLE (which I just finished last night), penned a series about post-war cartoonists in ATLAS and single-handedly keeps the Tim Hunter line from stinking unmercifully by digging his fingers into the squishy, language-as-magic meme. I'm curious to know if anyone else has followed his work. It's good eating.

While I haven't read his run on the Hunter series, I have read HICKSVILLE and ATLAS, as well as a great essay that exposes what a lame demagouge Scott Campbell is via deconstructing UNDERSTANDING COMICS. I hope the second issue of ATLAS comes out soon. His whole metaphor of comics as cartography really makes reading his stuff exciting on an intellectual level in a way only a few other creators have struck me (Morrison and Moore come to mind). While not nearly as consumed as Grant is on metaphysical questions, Horrocks is clearly engaged with the comics medium as an artistic expressive form in a strikingly theoretical way. The self-reflexive nature of both HICKSVILLE and what's out so far of ATLAS suggest that Horrocks, like Grant and others, is prepared to wow the comics world with his pomo prowess.

Love his stuff. Read Pickle religiously, before it was collected and republished as Hicksville. Am also desperate for the next issue of Atlas, but it's to be published annually. Gaah. I'm willing to wait....

My estimation of the man has swelled relatively recently, having read Hicksville, Hunter, and Atlas all w/in the last year or so. I'm fascinated w/the above mentioned aspects of his work and his is definitely a career that I'm likely to follow closely. Since it hasn't been mentioned, it's also worth noting his recent Comics Journal interview, which was one of the better ones I've read in the Journal.
