"Maybe you could start a new thread in the Coversation if you are up for it"

Uh, ok.
I'm a Dark ages reenactor, in the UK. We do lots of battling and a bit of living history. We portray most of the peps that were wandering about at the time normans, saxons but mainly welsh

HI little mother,

I know there are some 'Lithers into this sort of thing but they may be out tonight - if you don't get any replies tonight, bump the thread up again over the weekend.

Hi I do Live Roleplaying, sort of Re-enactment's bastard cousin, but quite a few people I know do viking era re-enactment. Their group's called Regia...something and they often do the big fests in York.

I go to the Oxford Re-enactor's fair thats on twice a year, tons of really nice costume and kit on sale and its quite a cool atmosphere. Oh I once saw Phil from Time Team wandering round there(the mad cornish bloke).

But all that fighting with blunted metal weapons is a bit dangerous for myself, I'd rather be running round the woods with a foam and latex staff beating up elves.

Have you been to any decent living history sites, I know some folk from a more 'authentic' dark ages LRP that used a re-enactor's village down in york to run stuff and it looks very cool.

I've been thinking about getting into the SCA. Sure, it's not always the most authentic group, but it could be fun. For some reason, the thought of beating on people with a wooden sword is very appealing.

I'm with the Regia bunch the welsh contingent, probably be at York next year (with a bit if luck).
I've seen the SCA's website, it's fun they have some good syuff on viking dresses (I'm going to a wedding next month and feel the need to dress like a girl).
There's a nice LHE-esque type thing near penarth in Wales, it's called Cosmeston its a recreated medieval village, worth a look, especially on bank holidays when the reenactors turn up to play. Last May day was good fun, we were mighty and liberated a table.
Oxford isn't in oxford this novemeber is it, I'd heard warwickshire?

I've had to listen to years of rants from my brother about how much the SCA sucks. I won't go into details, but I've now been conditioned to shudder when I hear about them. He's a stickler for historical accuracy so he does the whole "beating people with blunted metal using historically accurate fighting techniques". It looks painful and fun. He's also their armourer, so if anyone needs some, let me know.

What is the relationship between these various activities and the much-loved Renaissance Fairs we enjoy so much here in the USA?

On a less serious note, here is an article that was purported to be from the Seattle Goth-Intelligencer (do not read if you are easily offended):

Local Vandal Draws Crowds at Renaissance Fair
Friday, June 8, 2001

By JO-BERT RAMIESON
SEATTLE GOTH-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST

The annual Seattle Renaissance Festival is recognised for excellent exhibits and the rare opportunity for the general public to see the nerds and goths of Seattle strut their stuff.

But in this year's Festival, a new breed of exhibitor has arisen. Notable amongst them is local vandal Studly Hungwell, previously noted in this column for the abnormally small size of his peepee.

Mr Hungwell, dressed entirely in form-fitting elasticised black suede, entertained hundreds of visitors to his exhibit on puppy molestation. Many of his visitors were cats, mewing with appreciation but relieved that they were this week enjoying a rest from Mr Hungwell's attentions themselves.

Others amongst the milling crowd were dog cobreeders and puppylovers of all ages, eager to benefit from the tips and demonstrations of the self-proclaimed "Master of Molestation".

"We were excited to hear that Studly has moved on from his theme of previous years," said a Festival spokesperson, "Crowds at Studly's rat-sucking booth have dwindled in the past two years, and this new perversion is just the shot in the arm that local goth and vandal culture needs."

Don't have time for a proper posting, but will again soon.

Will have to natter some more about this, I'm surprised how much I am missing the re-enactment scene at the moment, mostly due to an unexpected confluence of influences.

Must post here again soon.
