Is anyone else here aware of/into the Re/Search series of books? V Vale and Andrea Juno have come out with a consitently high quality series of books exploring various 'underground' cultures, from what I've seen, usually consisting of lengthy interviews, loads of photographs, beautifully laid out. Personal favourites include (naturally) Angry Women, which has extensive and inspiring interviews with the likes of Diamanda Galas, bell hooks and Kathy Acker. It was criticised, I think, for being rather 'performance artist' based, and an Angry Women in Rock version was also published (which, of course, could also be criticised as being too centred on white/American music - why just rock?), with Tribe 8 and Chrissie Hynde. Re/Search introduced me to a lot of things, most notably the life and work of Bob Flanagan (Supermasochist!) even though at times I've got a slight feeling that I'm at the zoo peering at the 'freaks'.
Thought a few Barbefolk might be into this stuff, if they're not already.... |
