Sun signs and Moon signs

It is recommended that I record the sun sign and moon sign in my Magical Record along with the date and day - can anyone tell me how to work them out?

Sun sign is easy - it's the basic zodiac stuff. Moon sign changes rapidly (goes through all 12 signs in slightly more than 24 hours) and you'd need to go to something like astro.com and see where the moon is at any particular hour. Phase of the moon is likely to be more useful - waxing, waning, cresent or gibbous, or one of the quarters. That you can figure out from an astrology chart as well - if the moon is in the same half of the diagram as the sun (less than 90 degrees away, either side) it will be a cresent, and if it's in the opposite side it will be gibbous.

nope.

the moon take about 1 month to travel through all the signs. You can get all the lunar information here:

As far as the sun goes, I have yet to find a good online source that gives the exact time the sun enters a new sign. If you can find a good ephemeris (I had a calander last year that listed all planetary movements to the minute) at your local new-age store you'll be set.

my mistake - I was thinking of the ascendant.

I highly suggest getting a copy of Llewellyn's astrological calendar or an Ephemeris (much harder to read though). These are my best friends for recording dates and making ritual projections. Then I use the sun and moon symbols and astrological symbols to record into my book under the date.

Here's a handy piece of software which addresses Adam's requirements: Cal93 supplies the "Thelemic Date", which includes the locations of the sun and moon as follows:

Anno iv10 Sol 26° Leo, Luna 20° Capricorn
Dies Lunæ
Monday, August 19, 2002 e.v. 12:56 PM

Cal93 is freeware, and a steal at the price. It will also generate the planetary hours, give you alarms for sunrise, -set, zenith and nadir--handy for the Liber Resh observances, and spit out random quotes from the Book of the Law.

A more fully-featured (and harder to figure out) alternative, also free, is Astrolog, which is a full-blown horoscope charting program. Also freeware.

Finally, if you're after a program that will give you the current phase of the moon, here's one...

Thanks all, that's exactly what I was after.

...but give me more! How about the relevance of moon signs?

Also - I tried all the above programs and Astrolink was the only one that worked properly.

I am sure that others can add to my list here but this is a start. I hope it is what you are looking for

Moon in Aries - beginnings, bursts of energy, making room for new ideas and possibly ventures, passionate emotions; can be destructive especially, if the moon is full. Useful time I find, for protective spells but even more so for banishing and exorcism.

Moon in Taurus - things settle down, emotions are spent a bit from the previous moon phase, concentrating on the task at hand is easier though. Now is a good time to focus and apply inspiration to action in a consistent manner. This phase has a reference in the tarot as well -6 of disks or, Success in the Crowley deck. Good money spell time.

Moon in Gemini - Hmm, this one messes me up. Not too sure about it. I think this is a good time for business correspondence and studies. People have a tendency to talk a lot and say what they really think at this time but, I don't really have any solid references other than my own understanding and experiences.

Moon in Cancer - Here Cancer is exalted by it's own planetary influence. This can manifest in a manner that may appear lazy and apathetic especially for materially oriented individuals but, that is an illusion. Illusions run high at this time. For those who study psychic arts, they may feel their awareness increase or sharpen. This is a good time for divination and spells of compassion and protection of home and children.

Moon in Leo - Again, I am not sure what to say here. I know that it is a good time for spending with family but, also for dramatic scenes that can come with those kinds of get-togethers. People may feel more altruistic at this time so, it would be a good time to acquire funding for non-profits or engage in charitable events. I find this is a good time for protective spells or glamour spells.

Moon in Virgo – Time for details and analyzing. This is another good time for studies. This moon is also good for house cleaning and I usually use the first Virgo moon after Imbolc to do a major Spring cleaning.

Moon in Libra – Usually brings harmony to relationships, this phase being a good time for partnerships and group work. I usually feel drawn to my more artistic work at this time. There is a Tarot correspondence to this phase, Two of Swords or “Peace” in the Crowley deck. A good time for spells that enhance loving relationships, good friendships and even business partnerships.

Moon in Scorpio – This being a sign of secrets, it can mean the influence with the moon is for people to hide their emotions but, there are some dangers here. This moon can create complications due to this nature of Scorpio. I find that if I keep my mouth shut during this time I am better off instead of risking hurting people’s feelings! It is a good time for fantastic sex though, filled with intensity and passion only Scorpio can seem to sustain through all emotions. This is a bad time for invasive surgery.

Moon in Sagittarius – Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, an expansive planetary influence. A desire for travel might arise or even the opportunity to do so. One might even take up an offer to do so because of the spontaneous nature of this moon phase. Whatever the case, broadening the mind and adventure at this time are prevalent. This is also a time for study but not exactly in the applied or practical aspects o study, more in the acquiring and absorbing of knowledge and information.

Moon in Capricorn – Following the expansiveness of Jupiter is the now contractive nature of Saturn. This is knid of a “back to work” phase. One can take the information from the previous phase and apply it to their mundane, daily world. A good moon phase for employment seeking and job spells.

Moon in Aquarius – A good time for humanitarian work. Seeking freedom of expression and the unconventional or abstract. There is a Tarot associated with this phase, Seven of Swords or, “Futility” in the Crowley deck.

Moon in Pisces – Highly psychic time. There is more awareness of sub-conscious tides therefore, a very good time for divination. Some people who are not spiritually inclined may feel muddled by this phase or become depressed. There is a tendency to drink alcohol to excess now. This may come about due to feelings of vulnerability that surface at this time. I think this is another good time for quiet and reflection, even deep meditation if one was so inclined.

Well, I hope that was helpful. I know I couldn’t have possibly touched on all references or correspondences and it would be great to know what others think of what I have here, what they might add or dispute. I am relying on some information I have read but also some from my own experiences. So, this by no means is “gospel”. Generally, this works for me however.

Good specifics, MT.

Generally, astrologists claim lunar signs determine mood. Mercury affects communication, Venus and sex drive,.

By the way--downloaded the Cal93 linked above...thank you SM, it has proven most useful.
